• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I knew he was bad, but yiiiiikes...this is all so terrible! How on earth can Mormons listen to this stuff, assuming they accept he actually said it/wrote it (whether or not they agree with this lady's criticisms; I agree with them, but I also recognize that Mormons must be given some other way to look at the man, as I refuse to believe that your average Mormon is so amoral so as to be okay with this stuff just because he's their leader for a time), and still 'sustain' that he was a righteous leader of their religion? Horrific! I can name at least a dozen Christian priests and bishops of antiquity and the modern era who were deposed for seemingly less! (Read: having wrong theology, which is no doubt poisonous, does not necessarily inspire a person to treat others in such horrible ways in the here and now; Arius clearly had a lot of friends, y'know.)

Further evidence from other videos (y'know, in case you don't see any problems with anything in the above video...):

Brigham Young's 1st Address to the Utah Legislature on Slavery - 23 January, 1852

Brigham Young's 2nd Address to the Utah Legislature on Slavery - 5 February, 1852

Judging from the words coming out of his dumb brain, does any of this sound like a guy you'd name your religion's flagship university after, if you had the option to go with, I dunno...literally anybody else?

It boggles the mind!

Considering the obvious clickbait video title, why on Earth should anyone take what she has to say at face value?

Ask yourself that question and then examine her claims for yourself.

edit -

Before anyone tries to dismiss me, remember that:

1. I've been on the internet 20 years now, most of that spent dealing with counter-cult types who hate me for existing

2. I write for newspapers, and have periodically found myself in the position of critiquing my alleged competition as well as other writers.

When you see a title that is clear and obvious clickbait to get attention, you should regard anything and everything thereafter as automatically suspect until you can fact-check it for yourself.

1. I've also been on the internet for at least 20 years now (probably more). What's your point? What does that have to do with anything?

2. Looking into the claims myself is what led me (via YouTube recommendations) to the two subsequent videos, which are BY's own words in favor of slavery and racism.

YouTube's recommendations are set up by way of an algorithmic means to keep shoveling at you content based on what you've previously seen. This has actually led to considerable controversy, as the algorithms can send people down rabbit holes pretty quickly.

I myself have *two* YouTube channels, and so I know this from personal experience. This includes one rather hilarious incident in which YouTube recommended one of my own videos to me, leading to myself and a few other people who use the platform to joke about someone having potentially divided by 0.

Not only that, but because of the various Adpocalypse events that have happened over the last few years, the rules for what it takes to get a person's channel monetized have changed so radically that if a person's channel doesn't grow like a mushroom cloud they'll be stuck operating at a loss without donations / sponsors since they'll never pass muster. Hence a lot of channels using clickbait titles, making shocking assertions in their videos based on flimsy or doctored facts, et cetra.

The Christian Counter-Cult has no qualms with being deceptive, and so they quite naturally adapted to this environment. Not only that, but things have become easier for them to silence anyone in the comments who might dare expose whatever lies they're peddling this time around.

Put it all together, and the combination of "counter-cult video" + "clickbait title" + " the usual round of implied shocking claims" = "I have better things to do with my time."

Both Brigham Young and Joseph Smith we’re very sketchy characters to say the least but for Mormon’s to acknowledge that would bring into question all of the LDS doctrines and the need to exist as a church.

None of this changes or even addresses the fact that he gave those two pro-slavery, pro-racism addresses before the Utah legislature. You're not dealing with what he said, which is the entire point of the thread. He's terrible because he taught and believed this garbage, not because other people are pointing out that he taught and believed this garbage.. You're going on and on about YT and the "Christian Counter-Cult" movement and whatever...I'm not 100%, but I'm fairly sure that both of the channels that posted those videos are run by ex-Mormons who have not joined Christianity or anything, so none of this has anything to do with anything. (Thinker Of Thoughts definitely hasn't; not sure about Ex-Mo Lex, since I just found her yesterday. It wouldn't matter anyway, since again, they're based on Young's own statements, which don't change based on the identities of the reporters. He either said those things or he didn't, and it very much appears that he did.)
