  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So often, the mistake I see people making (well, at least to me, it is a mistake) is they read the Bible with preconceived notions they already possess about what they think it is saying or meaning.....

They take the ideas they already have in their minds about some passage in the Bible and they incorporate those ideas into the words of Scripture......

And, all too often, their preconceived notions about what they think the passage means take precedence over what that passage might actually be saying, and the true meaning of Scripture becomes lost or twisted.....

Yet, is it even possible to read Scripture without preconceptualization?? Are we all hopeless slaves to our own preconceptions or can we overcome them??

Mr. Myers,

Yes many do preconceptualize because they place "another desire" before the truth.

The truth is a fact. It is a fact that there is One and Only God, and His identity is seen Only through Christ, His Anointed Son. It is fact that Christ taught to Love Our Father, and Only Him, with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. In other words it is the only core belief to live by.

This also means that when man places another belief alongside or above the teaching of Christ, that man will now "preconceptualize" the Words of God in order to "fit into" what man has chosen to be right in his own eyes. This was done by the churches that Christ gave warnings to.

Christ read the Old Testament. Do you think that many Jews could have claimed that Jesus "preconceptualized" God's Word since His teaching was considered to be against their understanding of God's Word and their traditions? In addition to this, Christ was belittled and mocked by their perception of Him as a "carpenter" from Nazareth, a town from the region of Galilea, where as one said "Can anyhting good come out of there?".

However, Christ spoke the truth. He said to repent and seek out the kingdom of God. He taught to put God's Way first above all things. He taught that He was the Way and the Only Way to God. He said that He will return as King of kings and to rule with a rod of iron...God's Way and Only His Way. Christ was finally beaten, tortured, and killed for this truth. He was also resurrected for it.

At the return of Christ, many will come to Him saying that they spoke His Name, did healings in His Name, cast out demons in His name......and yet Christ has said that He will not know them because they were workers of lawlessness. It is a fact in God's Word that lawlessness is any desire-belief that places self interest before the belief in and service to the One and Only God and His Christ. This means that the majority of "Christians" have placed another core belief alongside or above that of Our Father.

I have written about this self-righteous core belief in other postings.

Wish you well.

The reading of the Bible with preconceived notions is to read into Scripture. However, this does not mean tha that you must forget what God has already taught you.

The truth is available if you are truly seeking God and the revelations from the Holy Spirit.

Without preconceptions the Bible would be absolutely meaningless.

Some preconceptions are so strong as to determine the way you read the Bible. If you free yourself from them, you can interpret the Bible in a new way, and this often results in spiritual growth. Ideas are powerful things.

I try to do this as much as possible in order to verify the doctrines taught by men. For example, try reading the Bible without the preconceived notion of eternal torment and see what you come away with.

In fact, many of man's doctrines fall apart when you read the Bible without preconceived notions.

It is a must to try and read with out preconceptions. In fact most of the teachings about Heaven are false because people will not stop and read the Bible. They just remember and go with what others have said. Heaven is not gold and does not have jewels everywhere. That is going the be the New Heaven and the New Earth, specifically the New Jerusalem. It is what has the foundations and the walls and all that, not the current Heaven. Read Rev. 21.
