Reading Literature Deepens Empathy

Do you agree?
So reading the classics for instance such as To Kill a Mockingbird or The Great Gatsby or Great Expectations for instance, deepens empathy?
I heard someone say this on a youtube doco I was watching the other day. It made me stop and reflect. I think there is something to that insight. Is it a good reason to read more fiction, especially the classics?

I can't read great gatsby anymore, tears just won't stop falling same with catcher in the rye, I just can't.

Actually, that sounds like it's probably true.

Might find a good book to read now... it's been a while.
