I'm curious how any of you may have handled problematic situations at RCIA as a sponsor.
I have been at my Parish about 3 years but never been a sponsor (at this parish). I was asked by a friend who has rather orthodox views like myself (faithful to magesterium etc).
My first night a very "well churched" Protestant asked, "Whats all this stuff about Mary?" and the "catechist" explained it was a nice way to "feminize our overly masculine hierarchy" in the church.
Sooooo... after I closed my mouth and got up off the floor I politely added some things to his explanation. Needless to say I got a talking to after class because I might scare people away.
Mind you - I did a 1 minute superficial treatment of Mary as "first Christian", conduit of the incarnation and mentioned that she was understood by many in the early Church as the "New Eve" and closed by saying that marian devotions are not required. Really without much more detail than what I am posting.
I love my parish (a cathedral) and ithe Pastor although we part on many subjects theologically. I doubt approaching him would make one iota of difference (nor my unfortunately extremely liberal Archbishop) soooo... here is the question of sorts:
Do I stay and hang tough - hoping that perhaps I can make a difference in one person's life as sponsor or bag it? It is downright painful at times to listen to "catechists" butcher the teachings of the faith so profoundly.
Previously - years ago at a parish I left because the "catechist" insisted that the Eucharist was the "spirit of the risen Christ only" not the Body, Blood, Soul & Divinity as the Catechism states.
Any thoughts? My inclination is to see who I am paired with before making a decision in the hopes that perhaps I can make some difference in that persons catechesis and formation but I not so hopeful about changing a major cathedral's RCIA team - and yet I will feel guilty if I do slink away as that is how the problem got so bad in the first place!
