i think the appeal is egotistical in nature and a way to demonstrate intellectual superiority. It is gratifying to one's ego to be the only one who sees the truth and then to explain said truth to all the simpletons around you who have been fooled. I think it is also related to trollism. There are some people who just get a rise out of being trolls. The other week I saw a 21yr old "boy" with a giant blown up photo on his shirt. The photo was a close up of a graphic inappropriate content scene that would make a sailor blush. He was standing in line at the grocery store. Someone commented on the inappropriateness of his shirt and then said "boy" went on a spiel about Free Speech and a free society and liberty yada yada yada. It was clear he was used to this argument-- that in fact he enjoyed this argument . More and more people started jumping into the fray and he relished this. I then said, "Will you guys please stop feeding this troll. He wore this shirt just so he could have this argument and there is nothing you can say to enlighten him. He is a jackass and he delights in being a jackass. In fact, I bet you he thinks he is the enlightened one and the rest of us are the idiots." I find the above is most often the case when someone proposes to argue something insane
