What gave rise to my current somewhat philosophical thought is this, I created another thread in ethnics and morality, regarding whether or not conscious rape or equivalent to unconscious rape, it seems to give rise to some responses where some were appalled by the idea that the two types of rape could be different morally.
Human thought has always been interesting to me, that at various times and via situations we shift from focusing on the practical effects and into the philosophical. The overwhelming response out of 30 responses thus far, was that rape was horrible because of "lack of consent".
However, "lack of consent", cannot be the sole defining variable for how horrible rape is. After all, if that was the case, then all acts that lack consent would be equally as horrible. Rape is horrible in part because of the suffering it causes to the victim, as in all crime, it is something that is within all manners of crimes.
The result always matters. But I have noticed, that on issues of rape, and issues dealing with sexual assault, it illicit certain types of lynch mob behavior.
When a crime of a sexual nature is involved, people are much more quick to punish and treat all perpetrators as being in a unified group.
I can't quite put my finger on what exactly is the variable that causes this to be so, or perhaps I am even wrong, perhaps crimes of rape do not illicit a greater outrage than other crimes.
I'd even go as far as to say that rape causes greater outrage than murder.
