Ya know Grand, it sounds like many of the white athletes (mostly hockey guys) in the dorm back in my day. (mid 1970s)

I don't think it is actually a race issue as much as it is a college age issue and a jock issue. Their whole purpose in being there is to trash others.

I attended a predominately White university decades ago. Some people were seeing who could turn their stereos up the loudest during weeknights. It was worse on Saturday night with keg parties and the revelry of the undisciplined. People who were trying to get good grades sometimes went to the library to study. There was a church center where others went to study. I do not think people should be called bad merely because of their race or ethnicity. Obama went to Harvard. His wife is educated too. A liberal arts college may have easier entrance requirements as liberal arts degrees do not always lead to high paying careers. Students who could not get into Harvard or Stanford were accepted at small liberal arts colleges. If you had been brilliant enough to get into an engineering or medical school, it is probable your neighbors would be less wild. A theater is difficult to find funding for. Society rewarded some of the most popular actors and actresses, but many performers will have to find work in careers outside of what they are training for in college.

I understand what it's like to have unwanted racist thoughts, I've struggled with them as well. I was a server for about 18 months, and was consistently treated like dirt at my first restaurant from the majority of my African American customers. I was insulted, yelled at, tipped nothing, given dirty looks, attitude, ordered around (no asking, no manners, and no regard for the fact I had other tables), I was even flipped off twice, and one of coworkers quit after she was called (I'm going to clean it up) a female dog and told to fudge-off by a table trying to walk out without paying. I talked to a coworker once I was closer to and he said "It definitely changes the way you think and you causes you to see a different side."

What worked for me is distancing myself from that, which reminded me of what I knew before that, that not all black people are like that.

You have ever right to be angry and outraged at this situation and the people who are causing your grief.

Get out of there ASAP. Even if you have to quit school for a year to make the change, do it.

From your description, these people are living like animals, and the school should ensure that you have peace, quiet and safety in your dorm. The school has failed you, so I would not be inclined to get my degree there if I were you.

Change schools, can you? Your current college sounds like a nightmare. Why stay there? Masochistic?

Well, summer is here and I'm out of the school. Despite all of the issues, I'm definitely staying for next year. Like I said before, this dorm issue is the one bad thing about the college. I've made so many friends and it was really more my attitude than anything that led to so much bitterness. It's just something I'll have to work on.

It's not your attitude. People who are living with no regard for others is the problem. Don't blame yourself.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of the enemy are deceitful... Proverbs. You can listen to people telling you the problem is outside if you want. But I believe that would be a mistake. I use to believe that as well....and nothing changed until God changed Me.

But but...

Are you not even going to try to get a different roommate or dorm? Or perhaps look into living off-campus?
