"Racist" posters on the Univ of MD campus

These 2 posters were found last week in a couple of buildings on the Univ of Maryland campus in College Park MD.

Students and faculty alike were in shock and fearful.

In her six years at the university, the economics professor has never seen anything like this.

"This sort of behavior or sentiment, anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia, just outright racist positions were understood to be unacceptable so I certainly did not expect to see them on a college campus," Goldberg said.

"There's a difference between freedom of speech and the promotion of overtly racist ideology and I think, the campaign and the election have changed social norms," Goldberg said. "It's very important the university and people who make up this university push back and say this is not normal."

Angie Harmon, a coordinator in the economics department, filed a report with the Title IX office and the University of Maryland Police Department Monday morning.

"I was in shock," Harmon said. "The University of Maryland is, I think, a pretty liberal campus but also one that really makes a lot of efforts to make sure religious minorities and people of color are respected here. This wasn't the place I was expecting to see something like this."

Aside from group noted at the bottom of the posters being a known alt-right white nationalist group, do you find anything overtly (or covertly) racist or threatening in these posters?

I can agree that WS groups are pretty scarey.

But had they NOT put their logo on the bottom of the posters, would you find it equally upsetting?

OR - if it had pictured black people and had the logo of the New Black Panther party?

I think if you answer the questions, what on earth is threatening the very existence of those people like the ones pictured on the left poster? and, what solutions do the alt right group propose to mitigate these perceived threats?, then it's easier to determine if it is racist.

So, in your opinion, there is a real threat to the existence of white people because of these two quotes? Is it these two individuals you think the posters are referring to? (as opposed to say, immigration , birth rates, or interracial relationships)?
If you acept that the major threat (if there is a threat at all ) to white people is a few quotes from extremists, or if you think that's what these posters are suggesting , what do you think they are then proposing as a solution?

Because in the minds of many racists, Trump's pre-election attitude has provided the green light.

I do not think the existence of African Americans are challenged by WS groups; nor do I believe black supremacy groups like NBPP can make a real dent against white Americans. (although I understand both groups can be very problematic for individuals and small groups)

But I find it interesting that the white group seems to be problematic while the black group does not.

Aside from group noted at the bottom of the posters being a known alt-right white nationalist group, do you find anything overtly (or covertly) racist or threatening in these posters?

The implication of the picture, about white people having a right to exist, or standing up for white rights, whatever that means, is silly and exacerbates identity politics.

There shouldn't be any black, white, or brown identity politics, we're all human beings, and citizens of our respective country. Silly factors like a little genetic difference or melanin in the skin doesn't change that.

Saying that, of all the places in the world, the university should be the most open place where people of all political stripes and ideas can come together to engage and discuss and exchange what they think. There shouldn't be bans.

the reason the "white groups" are problematic is because they aren't doing anything out of self defense. the KKK wasn't founded in the name of self defense. it was made in order to subjugate and oppress free blacks in the post emancipation period along with the 'black codes' which restricted their rights in society.

saying that someone is a "black supremacist" for desiring to protect themselves from terrorists is absurd and a feeble attempt to poison the well.

In what sense? A lot of the open racism and hostility towards non-white folk has decreased. You won't see a lot of racial slurs on the street, not like they used to. Though depends which neighbourhood you might walk through...

Officially racism isn't as sanctioned as during the Jim Crow days. However and unfortunately, humans have a way of cunningly getting around official edicts which might cramp their preferred style. So reduction of the blatant examples you mention can be easily offset by an increase in subtle and semi-subtle methods of racism which more than very effectively take up the resulting reduction of blatant racism slack.
