How do u pronounce r? I do it in the back of my throat, it sounds so weird, but it helps saying 3 be easier. (trois) How am I supposed to do it? Answers in English please, I don't know French yet, wish I did.

I've been trying to figure out how to make it. Whenever I say it, I think it sounds too rough. Maybe I'm wrong though. To me, it sounds almost like the German "ch".

Put the front of your tounge against the back of your bottom teeth, and raise the back of your tounge to your uvula. You then sort of "push" (or so it seems to me) the back of your tounge forward, and make a sound. The should come from the top of the back of your mouth and you should use your vocal chords. Often after a "t" it sword of "rolls", like in "très."

Try to listen to it being pronounced by native speakers, and you can find audio clips online. Keep practicing, I've been learning french for a few months and my "r" is alot better than it was when I started.

Wow, thanks bulldog, that helped me! lol. I didn't realize it until after I practiced it a few times like you said, but that's kind of how I've been doing it. But it wasn't the same, I wasn't doing right. I think that "r" sounds so cool.

Glad that I could be of help! When I started learning French, I asked on a message board, and got pretty much the same asnwer in diffirent terms, and it helped me quite a bit.

But it wasn't the same, I wasn't doing right. I think that "r" sounds so cool.

Ha! I've never thought of it as cool, but there certainly is a great feeling of accomplishment when one makes progress in pronouncing the "r."

CeeBee, don't be discouraged if you can't get it at first, or if it doesn't even seem like you're close. I had the same proble, but trying it over and over and over again helps a lot.

I think I have got the actual sound, but like Cm I think I do it too rough/hard and is DOES sound like a German ch. And I am doing it like you say. I have heard some native speakers, sometimes it seems like they do it "rougher" than other times, and when talking fast they seem to just do an English r...

Simply "err" or "air" It spell like Detroit, in trois. The r doesnt have a significant difference between english and french. The letters that are a confusing for many are.. the G and J. In english it is dGee and dJay.. In french the G is Jeh and the J is Gee. Isnt nice?
