  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Morning, everyone.

I originally posted this in the Pub, but I was told to put it out here for all to see.

Anyway, I've just got a quick question that I intend on asking both you guys and the Anglicans: as one of the few other groups that venerate the Saints and the Theotokos, how many of you guys would be interesting if we could get Erwin to put in an entirely optional feature similar to birthdays: Saints' Days?

Here's how some of us TAW-ers think it could work: On the Edit User Info page, there could be a field (perhaps tied to certain denominational crosses so some of the more rabid Evangelicals don't have fits) that allows you to input your patron's name and your nameday, and then, when that day rolls around, there's a notification of the fact in all of your posts for that day.

This idea came up when we had about four people in TAW have their namedays within a week of each other and some of us saw the enormous number of posts in the Taverna that were basically variants on "Many years,___________!/Happy nameday, __________!"

So, I'm just curious to see how many people would be interested. I figure if we could get enough interest, Erwin might listen to us. Thanks a lot!

A person would enter his/her own date, I assume? Otherwise it'd be impossible to keep track of when feasts are celebrated in the different traditions.
That would be the plan, because I know of only a (relatively) few Saints whose feastdays are the same in East and West (St. George and St. Nicholas spring immediately to mind).

I'm glad to see this much support, guys! This is rather heartening. Maybe Erwin will do it. And I can't imagine that it would be that much coding. Maybe just an alteration of the coding for birthdays and adding another field, tops. Of course, this is coming from one who is barely computer-literate, so take it for what you will.

You can always tell the rabid Fundigelicals from the normal ones because they're the ones ready to call us heretics who trust in dead ritual and worship Mary and don't use the Bible and all that fun Jack Chick stuff.

And so far as I know (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), one's patron saint is the one whose name you took at Confirmation/Chrismation. That's just from my limited understanding, though.
