  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings all.

I just have a few questions that keep puzzling me. A friend and I are reading the Bible from beginning to end. We're on Exodus now.
I would just like to know what it is with God and numbers? 6 days work one day rest, 6 years farming 1 year not, 40 days and 40 nights, etc etc etc. Does anyone know the significance of them all? I know the 6 and 1 comes from the 7 days of creation...but why did God create the earth in 7 days? I fail to see the significance of the numbers.

Also...whats up with all th animal sacrifices and God being so specific in His instructions? Like the Ark of the covenant...why so specififc?

Just some things that are baffling me. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and God Bless :)

Our human talk is sometimes meaningless. But God's words have some kind of a purpose. Whatever God communicates to us, contains symbolism and His message.

I believe that 7th day rest - communicates to us a promise of salvation, our rest (Rev 14:13, Heb 4:11)

Sacrificing a lamb without blemish - pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus. And Jesus was without sin, so that's why the lamb had to be without blemish in order to correctly symbolize the event.

Eating bread without leaven - I think leaven means deceit. And Jesus is the bread that we eat. And He is without deceit. So to correctly symbolize that, the bread had to be without leaven.

This verse says that the temple was a copy of the Heavenly Temple (spiritual version, like instead of a lamb, there would be Jesus, instead of a lampstand, there would be God's seven spirits, instead of water, there would be God's cleaning action through Jesus...)

HEB 8:5 They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."

If you build it wrong, it woudn't be a correct symbolization anymore.

God was establishing (building the foundation of) his redemption plan. Not unlike the teacher of Helen Keller (a blind and deaf mute) God is teaching a spiritually blind, deaf, mute human race about eternal destiny.

Keller's teacher began teaching her with hand signals that stood for something like heat. She applied heat to Helen's hand and then made the sign for heat... and so on. This is what God did essentially with humanity. The numbers were to establish the system used to usher in salvation.

A good thing to remember about the Bible is that it is about many things but at its core is Christ.

John 5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

So on every page in the Bible there is something either about Christ or pointing to Christ. The animal sacrifice, for example, teaches man that his sin is not so inconsequential as he thinks. We sin and we wither hide it or down play it. God taught humanity "No, your sin even the slightest sin cost me my Son's life."

Jesus who knew no sin became the sin offering for humanity. Animal sacrifice was a depiction of this great sacrifice made by the Ultimate Innocence by sacrificing lesser innocent life for man's sin.

2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Pray the Holy Spirit tutor you as you read through the scriptures he inspired.

God bless!

Judaism has had great fun with numbers in the Bible. Every Hebrew word has a numerical value because letters also act as numbers. This is also true in Koine Greek.

A professor at a Christian College in Roseville, Minnesota who taught Hermeneutics wrote about the principle of 'First Mention.' That is, the first time a concept or number appears in Scripture provides the context for its use later on in the Scripture. I don't know if it actually works or not.
