Why do the meetings have "monthly" in their name? They still meet every Sunday, even if it says "monthly," right?

What should I "expect" at a meeting?

What sort of dress is considered appropriate? Are jeans and a t-shirt fine or should I put on something little nicer or do the whole "Sunday Best" thing?

Thanks in advance. :)

Most Friends are pretty tolerant, even plain Quakers. Wear whatever you would normally wear.

A monthly meeting is more along the lines of a business meeting out here so I expect it's the same in the states.

If you are used to lots of up & down, singing & praying out loud you may find it a little hard to focus in the traditional Quaker silence. Some meetings do have preaching but usually someone just stands up if they feel led by the spirit to speak briefly or quote some scripture.

LOL. Hi, Jim. We're a non denom because basically the island is too small for each denom to have their own church but all the Christians want to worship every week so we got together, thrashed out the doctrinal differences & called ourselves a church. We get some interesting services. I was giving the message today (interesting week!:)) & the worship leader, knowing my worship preference, tried to pace the service so it was rooted in a Quaker silence & incredibly peaceful. It was a great service & really blessed the congregation. It's amazing how the Holy Spirit can lead someone with no experience of this type of worship to create the essential essence & flavour ~ & most of the congregation would have no idea! ^_^

Enjoy. I wish we had a meeting close by but we don't so I'll be doing the noisy up down thing again this week.:sigh:
Hi there. Out of curiosity, where in Australia are you from (be as vague or as specific as you like)?

I am based in Bowen in north Queensland, and also wish we had a meeting closer than Townsville (which is like a 2 hour drive).

Your combined church service sounds intruiging, hope you had a wonderful time of worship.

I am fairly new to Quakerism. In your opinion, how "Christian" is Australian Quakerism? I've spoken to a couple of Quakers who would not even consider themeslves Christian at all, and I've yet to hear any actual prayers to God during meeting, only recitations of poetry or similar. Is this the norm within Australian Quakerism, do you know? My own faith is quite Christocentric, but at times I find Quaker worship a little vague and unfocused, for lack of a better word.

Peace and blessings,

Michael.

I'm near Brisbane & the closest meeting is about 2 hours away too. I attended my first Quaker meeting in Sydney ~ older people & very Christlike. QLD seems strangely new ageish but as I've yet to actually get to a meeting I can't really say for sure. How Christ centred seems to depend on the individual meeting so your insights are probably extremely correct. I actually fellowship with a couple of plain Quaker ladies in the States ~ as I am quite sure of their Christian base. One of the joys of silent worship & fellowship is than neither distance nor time zones matter in the least.lol.

In quaker meeting we have a yearly meeting which is a GROUP of meeting together. A monthly meeting is just one meeting on its own. we have YEARLY meetings for buisness to address the group of meetings together and there is the monthly meeting which is the one meeting haveing its business of its own. There is also a quarterly meeting as well which is i believe a smaller group of meetings together, but i might be wrong on this. I shouldnt seeing how i am trying to go through to be a quaker pastor. We go through a recording processs. i have JUST started it.

I don't know if any 'holiness' group members are around,
but they consider it
and most men do to
tempting if a woman shows too much immodesty in her dressing.
On Jewish Believers forums(elsewhere on the web) the wives post that their husbands
TURN AWAY FROM LOOKING AT WOMEN who dress IMODESTLY
so they aren't themselves(the men) stumbled/sinning with lust.
(the woman may be a stumbling block, but that doesn't mean that every man will stumble; those trained in Righteousness turn away if there is a provocation to lust)

This regulation/obedience is ONLY for believers immersed in Yeshua living His Life....
there is no regulation/obedience for nonbelievers nor for members of most other bodies.(jurisdictionally speaking).
(though it helps if a child has been brought up right, very rare it is)
