  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jon Meacham said:
Gibson is an ultraconservative Roman Catholic, a traditionalist who does not acknowledge many of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). He favors the Latin mass, does not eat meat on Fridays and adheres to an unusually strict interpretation of Scripture and doctrine—a hard-line creed he grew up with and rediscovered about a dozen years ago

Hey everybody,

I'm not looking for a debate, of course. I'm just curious if you take the same position as Mel Gibson in your faith, or do you disagree with him? I've not heard to much on this topic. What were the reforms of the Second Vatican councIl?

On, another note, Meachum defends the movie, even though, I don't agree with everthing he says. You can be the first to comment on this in my other thread in Christian Apologetics. Perhaps many here on CF have and I'm behind^_^

Mel is ambiguous and -usually- silent about his beliefs. His father is an extreme traditionalist and Mel told Diane Sawyer that he was not going to discuss that. I don't doubt that Mel is very conservative and traditional (so am I) but from his interview the other night, I would say he is nowehere near his father in extremity. Mel simply refuses to give us enough data to pin him down.

Mr Gibson does not publicly address where he stands. We have debated it before but no one has been able to find proof one way or the other.
That would mean that Meacham could be doing some bad journalism, which I would not be surprised with.

I want to hear about why some RC's are unltraconservatrive.

I do recall a rather impolite swipe at the Pope by Gibson early on in the making of the movie. Basically saying that he didn't need or want any input from the Pope, didn't care about anything he or the Vatican would have to say. At that point I had planned on skipping the movie if that attitude continued. If he had no use for the Pope I could live without. He seems to have backed off that and they really wanted the Pope's thumbs up for the movie. Probably not because of any love for Pope John Paul, but not wanting to alienate potential movie-goers.

He has been evasive, some of that to not offend both Catholics and Protestants (who want to claim him), but suppose he should be given the benefit of the doubt, in particular since mainstream Catholic groups seem to be backing the movie.

Will be getting out to see the movie Wednesday.

I think he wants as much approval as possible from all sides, he mostly invited church people to the screenings.

But if you don't know Latin then what good would it do you? It's not like the Mass could be sub-titled

Well it kinda can-- there'a a missal to follow along. You read the readings ahead of time. The Homily is still in the vernacular. Hey it's no harder than an English Mass with three kids under 6!!

There are actually a lot of reasons.

The changes in the Mass have had some very far reaching ramifications on how people understand the Mass.

I could really get into the new Mass vs. the old Mass thing, but I'm afraid it will just sound like I'm whining...

So I'll just leave it at: there are a lot of things different between the new Mass and the old Mass, and most of them are not good differences.

That being said, Christ is just as present at the new Mass as the old Mass...

Some Catholic's believe the Mass should be in Latin... and for them, they can freely go to Latin Mass if they choose.
theseed, does that answer your question(s)?

I was writing a document for a project I was working on, and ran into this image of the tridentine (old) Mass being said in Pittsburgh. It's simply beautiful...

When I first started going to Mass again a few years ago, I fasted before communion starting at midnight (this seems to have been the old rule before Vatican II) instead of the one hour before. My reason for this was that fasting only one hour did not really seem like a fast at all, and in fact did not require any changes to my usual Sunday schedule whether I was going to Mass or not.

However, several posters on this board told me that I should not do this, and they had reasons and quotes from the Catechism, IIRC. Maybe others can supply details.
