  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey all...

I have a question for anyone familiar with the Tridentine Mass. I've never been to one, but am going to be in NJ for Thanksgiving this week, and found this chapel, which is run by the FSSP (http://www.ourladyoffatimachapel.com).

Fortunately, they have Mass every day, so I am planning on going to the 8:00 am Mass on Thanksgiving.

My question is, what should I expect? Having only experienced the Novus Ordo, I'm not sure what to expect. How much participation, compared to the Novus Ordo is there?

Just a general "What to expect"????

They will likely give you a latin missal when you walk in the door. I went to one, and it was nice in some ways, but overall, I did not much care for the latin because I could not follow along.
Recieving communion on my knees was nice - its a bit confusing if you haven't done it before so pay close attention to what everyone else is doing.

No, according to Ecclesia Dei it is allowed and anyone who tells you different needs to read the document. However, not all Churches that perform them are in accord with the Vatican or even accept the Pope's legitamacy so be careful! SSPX are not (though I pray one day will be) legit. Check with your local Diocese to find a list of them in your area.

Is the Tridentine mass forbidden?
No, not at all. Actually, according to Ecclesia Dei, it is supposed to be celebrated widely and generously.

RhetorTheo said:
If it's not forbidden, why do so few churches use it?
That's a great question.

RhetorTheo said:
And isn't the Tridentine mass different from the Latin Mass (that is, can't the Tridentine mass be performed in the vernacular)?
Either the Tridentine or Novus Ordo Mass can be celebrated in Latin. Not sure about the Tridentine Mass in the vernacular though.

Are churches allowed to perform a high mass on every Sunday?
They must first be granted approval to do so from their Bishop. This approval is called an "indult". I am currently trying to get the Bishop of my diocese to grant us an indult.

I don't think the diocese will look kindly on people calling and asking for a listing of SSPX chapels in their area. ;)

Can you give me a few pointers how? The only one I know is in Manhattan at St. Agnes, but I would love to convince mine to have one in Nassau County.

Cool...as long as I get a missal, I'll be OK.

I'll be OK receiving communion kneeling. My current parish is the only parish that I have ever been to which still uses their communion rail!
If you were a bit closer to me, I'd lend you one of my missals. I've got 2 or 3 of them. There is a parish about 20 min. from my house that is staffed by FSSP. It's truly beautiful! Their Thursday Mass is in the evening and is chanted from beginning to end.
