  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did the original church use musical instruments as a part of worship? The question came up in this thread:

http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=334096#post334096

I know I've seen threads about this subject, I've just never read them.:)

I don't think the original church allowed musical instruments. When did the Catholic Church first start allowing musical instruments as a part of worship?

And what was the original reason for not allowing instruments? Is there a Bible scripture that makes it wrong to play instruments in church?

To Auntie:

I'm not all that learned when it comes to music in worship. I'm not all that great with music, PERIOD. I mean, people PAY me NOT to sing. I could make a fortune renting out Carnegie Hall, and then collecting money from the entire audience who pay me to come out on the stage and NOT SING.

For your answer, though, I'd look to the Old Testament, specifically Psalms. A lot of them were written by David, who sang and danced, and they call for musical instruments to "make a joyous noise unto the Lord."

I personally believe that music is a Spiritual Gift, and that in order to fully appreciate it, you must give it back to God, to use in His Service.

(and when you do, I'll just smile along, tap my foot, and maybe clap in time, okay?)

Peace be with you,

Probably the moment they stopped undergoing persecution for their beliefs.

Musical Instruments in Church Services

Thanks Bondservant.:) That will make for a lot of reading, and I've discovered your post late at night. I've put the links on my favorites & will read them later.:)

The question is important to me, because the church I was brought up in claims that the early church didn't allow musical instruments for worship. I was taught that it was a sin. I don't believe it is sin, but that is what I was "raised on". I've always been curious where they got the idea from, since the NT doesn't say it is wrong. Nevertheless, the Church of Christ doesn't allow any musical instruments in church, supposedly based on the teachings of the early church.
