• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matthew 19:9-12

9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
10 His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
11 But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: 12 For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”

1 Corinthians 7:36-38

36 But if any man thinks he is behaving improperly toward his virgin, if she is past the flower of youth, and thus it must be, let him do what he wishes. He does not sin; let them marry. 37 Nevertheless he who stands steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but has power over his own will, and has so determined in his heart that he will keep his virgin, does well. 38 So then he who gives her in marriage does well, but he who does not give her in marriage does better.

In the situation described above, the man feels that he is behaving improperly toward a woman and that it would be better for him to marry her. But what if the woman doesn't feel the same way? What if she can control herself? I would think that many woman can control themselves. Though this isn't such with all woman, but generally we can keep our desires in check. Should she refuse his proposal? It seems that the Bible teaches that a person who is able to accept celibacy, should.

And if the person that chooses to control himself does better than the person who marries, then shouldn't all Christians strive for this? We are supposed to love the Lord with all our heart, so shouldn't we strive for the best? Isn't one of the fruits of the Spirit self-control? But striving for celibacy is never something I hear taught. I always hear teachings on marriage, though.

Maybe I'm missing something? Thoughts/opinions/explanations?
It seems that the Bible teaches that a person who is able to accept celibacy, should.
i believe this is true. paul talked about the married, being caught up toward trying to please their spouse. but the unmarried caring more for the things of the Lord and how to please Him.

whenever i hear people coming on strong, talking about how it's not good for man to be alone i often think of what paul said which is the exact opposite.. 1 cor. 7:1

anyway..the bottom line that relates more to your original post is that it takes two to tango. why would anyone go into such a serious commitment with misgivings or doubts about what God has called them to.

I think Jesus is saying sex is good, but celibacy is even better.

it's good for your mind I think, good for your body, good for your soul.

I'd say even if you are married, you can still practice intermittant celibacy, probably make the marriage last longer

I believe the bible says to do this, to abstain from eachother for 2 weeks, but then to come back together so you aren't tempted to commit adultery or touch or something sinful.

It might cause you to lose your mind and start climbing walls. ;)

I would suggest reading of the book "Can A Christian Marry, Divorce and Remarry?"

I would, but I don't really have money to buy it. (Don't have a job.)

But if we should first seek celibacy, then why should we bother looking good? I mean obviously brushing teeth and showering isn't only to look good but rather to have a seeming appearance and for health but other things like styling hair, make-up, nice outfits... these things are just to look good. It all relates to the girl-guy thing. But if Christians are not to seek a wife or husband, why should we do that?

Sexual intimacy is not sin. If you think it is look at Genesis. God said it was NOT GOOD that man is alone.

I believe Paul is writing from a context of severe persecution. To be celibate freed one to immediate service to the gospel and the hindrance of a spouse/family that could be exploited in historical context.

Now the norm is to be married yet there are those who feel little need for marital companionship so they wholly serve the Lord. If we saw celibacy as the pinnacle of spirituality, prayed through to victory....guess what? We're extinct.

Sorry to know that you are unemployed. I will be praying for you to get a job soon. It is not that I want you to get a job to buy the book, but to sustain yourself as you grow in the knowledge of the Lord.

Not all can get into celibacy. For celibacy, healthy practices are a must. You need to live to help another, not for self glorification. For those that settle into secondary option of marriage that involves carnal relationship presentable appearance is beneficial, but overdoing it is an unchristian trend.

 1. [9] But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
 2. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
I don't believe Gods plan for man was to be celibate, again a choice Apostle Paul thought it good to serve the lord full time, and to concentrate his efforts for the cause of Jesus Christ.

That is the big difference between the OT and the NT in preference.

It's okay I still live with my parents so I don't really need a job. I'm too young to get married but this is an issue that has been on my mind lately and I wanted to hear opinions.
