Paradise is the good side of Shoel, i believe that has been emptied and they are in Heaven now, but i believe for the most part they sleep for now, because of Rev 6 & 7, not sure though. The Bible is really not clear on that, but it is clear about the Resurrection, that will happen :)

I believe our spirit goes to heaven and our bodies remain in the grave until Jesus returns. When Jesus returns we will be transform and receive a perfect physical body. I think a lot of things we don't understand though and as someone else said Only God knows.

We are face to face with the Lord as soon as we die, "no more sorrow, no more tears, no more pain, no more death, the old things have passed away". We get an interim body until the resurrection. What are soul (we) looks like is we are ivvisible yet we can see each other and we know each other. We go to paradise as soon as we die with the Lord. It is going to be so wonderful. :)

One's soul will go wherever one's body goes. Therefore, if one is resurrected immediately after death (as the bible indicates), one is resurrected--body/soul.

Obviously, from our temporal perspective, the body/soul will still be in the ground. Nonetheless, from an eternal perspective, the person will be fully resurrected the moment of death.

The soul "descends" to sheol, where particular judgment occurs. Some go to paradise, and others go to hades.

All time spent there is done in prayer, and either continued regeneration and theosis or decay to the point of total depravity.

Upon the Second Coming and Resurrection, the souls "rise" back to their bodies, made whole and perfected.

The dead in Christ go into the immediate presence of God where they await the resurrection and the reuniting with their bodies raised incorruptible. Those who die in unbelief go to hell where they wait in torment until the resurrection and the reuniting with their bodies, and as subsequently cast into eternal torment. The souls of both remain fully aware at all times.

There are those who believe the soul (psuche) is merely a buffer between the spirit (pneuma) and the body (soma), and the soul ceases to exist when the spirit of an individual leaves their body.

Think of two triangles pointing toward each other, one blue and the other yellow. Draw the triangles together until they overlap half way forming a diamond shape in the overlapping area where the two traingles are united (which is now green in color). The blue triangle is the body the yellow is the spirit and the green diamond is the soul. Separate the body from the spirit and the soul ceases to exist.

There are also those who hold to the belief that the spirit of an individual "looks" like the body. Take the biblical accounts of Moses and Elijah on the mount of transfiguration (Matthew 17). This was before anyone's bodily resurrection (even Christ's). They not only looked like Moses and Elijah but Peter James and John knew who they were without being told.

Consider Abraham, Lazarus, and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31) who had not only physical appearance in their disembodied state, but physical aspects. Pain could be felt. Thirst and water could quench thirst, sight, speech, localization in that one could not cross over to the other. And this was not eternity to come since the rich man still had brothers living here on earth.

Consider an amputee with "phantom pain." Could they be feeling a spiritual limb that remains though the physical is long gone?

Rev 6:9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.

These souls were in heaven before God.

Indeed.

There is an interchangability with soul / spirit in scripture. But also with soul and body:

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

This is why I used the description I did with blue and yellow making green (elements of both).

The interchangeability of the word soul in scripture was at times a misnomer like the term "angel" was (typically referring to a cherub or seraph) but the actual word simply means messenger which is used in places like relevaltion 2 and 3 to refer to pastors or evangelists.

Soul is the animate part of us.

"Spirit" is basically a Greek concept of "mind," which is somewhat likable to our highest functioning aspect of our persona and consciousness. The Greeks believed that the spirit was a part of the soul.
