Hi, new to the forum, not sure if this is the right place for this topic, but, i am currently doing a christian ethics assignment on Terrorism and i remember that there is a verse that talks about people doing things in Gods name but god doesn't approve. Something like that, can't find it anywhere, thought someone on here might be able to help. If there are any other verses that may help me feel free to throw them in two. Also, if anyone has any good sites about terrorism from a christian perspective that would also be a great help. thanks heaps

Hi Andy, there's plenty concerning false prophets in the Bible. Here are just a couple of passages, one from the OT and one from the NT. Hope these are along the lines of what you're looking for.

Yours and His,
David

"And The Lord said to me: "The prophets are prophesying lies in My Name; I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds." Jeremiah 14:14 RSV

"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. "You will know them by their fruits". "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' Matthew 7:15-16a; 21-23 NASB

you could say Samson was the first suicide terrorist, killing many by giving his own life to do it.

Steve

p.s. one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

I can see where you've drawn parallels, but your analysis is incorrect. The Philistines were sworn enemies of Israel. There was open war, and I'm sure there were many atrocities committed against the Israelites by the Phillistines. Samson didn't purpose himself to kill innocent women and children to force his religious beliefs on others. The only child of record was the one that placed his hands on the pillars before he pushed them down. I'm certain that no one there was considered "innocent" by God.

Times were very different then, and for the love and the covenant he made with his people, God often commanded Israel to slay its enemies, which often included women and children. Many people don't understand this, but God in his infinite wisdom knew that these "other" children would some day grow up and take up arms against Israel as well, and the women would breed more contempt and raise more children to fight against Israel. This is seen today where muslims send their children to blow people up. God set his love on the Israelites based on a covenant with Abraham. So God's directive for the Israelites to slay their enemies was an act of love for those who loved righteousness and made the decision to follow Him. All those who refused to accept the Lord as God were "evil doers" that were hopeless slaves to sin and iniquity. In a land where law and justice is enforced by the sword you carry, these were the rules of engagement.

The big difference between then and now is whether the Lord is with you. what Samson did probably saved the lives of tens of thousands of Israelites down the road, and that was God's will.
