  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm a KJV reader, and something seems odd in this verse.
Here it is.

Genesis 5:2 (KJV)
Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

Genesis 5:2 (NIV)
He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them 'Mankind' when they were created.

Anyone can explain why it says Adam and not Mankind?

Adam
This is the Hebrew word for "man"

Stop reading the King James version. Read a Bible that communicates in the language that you use every day; I recommend the NIV or the NET. Your post is a perfect example of why today's Christians shouldn't be using a Bible that is written in a language that is long "dead".

Man is a social creature, it is one of the things that makes us unique among mammals. Genesis begins with Babel and you can trace the God's goal to get a city of peace, Jerusalem and ultimately the New Jerusalem from Genesis all the way to Revelation. You can also see Satan's counterfeit with Babel become the Great Babylon.

There is a Jerusalem above that is free. Hagar and Sarah are contrasted.

Telling a KJV reader to "stop reading the KJV" is a bit much, I compare it to other versions, but still read it a lot - I studied much English Lit in college of about the same period.

It is no big deal that both Adam and Mankind are correct.

The Hebrew word translated "Adam" can mean "mankind" or "humanity" in the collective sense.

Modern translations of Genesis 5:2 (even the NKJV) acknowledge that as the only sensible meaning here, given that men and women collectively are being referred to:

CSB: he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind.

ESV: Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.

NASB: He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.

NET: He created them male and female; when they were created, he blessed them and named them “humankind.”

NKJV: He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created.

I'm afraid that the old KJV is just not translating this verse correctly.

Eh, no thanks. I ain't reading them modern bibles. I don't trust them.
I'd rather spend 20 minutes researching a verse, than not getting it at all or receiving the wrong message.

Matthew 9:13 KJV
for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Matthew 9:13 NIV
For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Matthew 18:11 KJV
For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Matthew 18:11 NIV
"" (An important verse omitted... mmmmmm)

Luke 4:4 KJV
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Luke 4:4 NIV
Man does not live on bread alone.

John 6:47 KJV
He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

John 6:47 NIV
He who believes has everlasting life.

There are many more, but I will NOT use any of these Bibles. I'd rather spend 15 minutes researching a KJV verse, than receiving the wrong message or not even getting it at all.

I was reading the NIV in the beginning, but that's a no-go at this point.
And if I do end up reading it, I would read both NIV and KJV to make sure they match.

I'm really, really tired of this kind of deceptive post.

Is this kind of deception the best case you can make for the KJV?

Matthew 9:13 KJV
for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Luke 5:32 NIV: I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Matthew 18:11 KJV
For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Luke 19:10 NIV: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

Luke 4:4 KJV
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Matthew 4:4 NIV: Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Those statement are not "removed in the NIV."

What about Matthew 18:11. There are more out there, then you can quote them from the NIV. When I am at home, I will send them. If you prove those verses are there, I will use the NIV as well.

Either way, I am staying with the KJV. I'm not finding it hard to read with and I am used to it.
Personally, I just don't trust the modern versions. I might actually read them both and compare them.
Don't know why people are so against KJV.
