I have always identified myself as a conservative and since the Republican party is the 'conservative' party I was a member for quite a few years. But the more I saw the actions of the party defying what I consider conservative, I had to leave the party...Or the party left me.

I think and have always thought that the Federal government should be a small entity of limited scope, size , and power that involves itself in our daily lives as little as possible. I find most of the big issues (and several of the small issues) supported by the Republican party to be contrary to this idea. Abortion is morally wrong in most cases, but the government should have no say in this. If I want to divorce my wife and marry a man, why does the government have the right to disallow this? Why can I not grow marijuana in my back yard for my personal consumption? Add on top of this the fiscally irresponsible Medicare drug plan, obvious bias of the current administration to personal/political loyalty over competence, massive deficits, and a foreign policy that is the exact opposite of what a traditional conservative would endorse, how can the Republican party continue to use the tag of conservative?

The problem with the architects of the new Republican party is that they have put ideology behind greed. They have no problem pulling national issues into the discussion in order to gain votes and, in turn, control. The control that they have wielded, however, is in the financial marketplace, not in the citizens of the country. The republican party, and almost to the same extent the democratic party, are merely shills for special interests and the few elite who pull the strings.

And I say this as an ex-republican.

IMHO many of your beliefs listed sound more like planks from the libertarian party. Although I do agree that much of what the Republican party has done (not most, but a big chunk) does not reflect conservative values. The size of the gov, the intrusion into state's rights, the fiscal frivalousness - none of that these things are in keeping with conservative positions.

Anti-abortion, anti-illegal drugs, anti-homosexual marriage - these things I believe to be conservative planks.

Do I spy another Ron Paul voter in the making? ;)

Conservatism seems to be dying. :(

But I don't see why they are conservative planks. They go against the grain of what I see as conservative. They are government intrusion into our personal and private lives and that is the antithesis of conservative ideology.

I can see the Republicans being called social conservatives, but not in any other fashion do the current group reflect conservative ideals. And as someone who has been called so far right that I come out the left side, it is very frustrating to see the 'conservative party' be nearly the antithesis of everything I believe in.

Were I able to vote in the Republican primary in my state, I would gladly vote for Ron Paul, but alas, I am registered as an Independent and that disqualifies me from voting in any primary.:(

That's the only reason I registered Republican, otherwise I think I would remain an independent. I wanted to have a vote and around here the Republican primaries are the general election as my area is a GOP stronghold.
