Question about vaccinations

I have a question for those of you who are vaccine supporters but who have chosen not to vax your child with any vaxes that are cultured out of aborted fetal cells. How have you come to terms with the idea that your child is unprotected from a disease that (s)he could have been protected from?

I am interested in those who support adminstering vaccinations (even if you do so on a different schedule that is mandated by the CDC). I am not interested in the positions of those that do not vaccinate at all or who don't vax due to the inherrant risks of vaxing.

Hmmm, I didnt know that there are vaxes that are cultured out of aborted fetal cells. This is really frightening?! YIkes, there is SO much that they dont tell you!!

It's been a while since I've looked into this, but I was under the impression that it was only some of the earlier vacs. that used the cells from aborted fetus back in the 60's or 70's. That it was only a handful of aborted cells were used. But anyways I have to run, and if I have a chance latter tonight I will look into it.

GolfingMom, I see that is a UK site and some of the alternatives are not licensed to be used in the US (I had already researched this topic a bit before making this post and that site you gave was one of the ones I visited as well) . So that is why I asked this question. For example, there is no licensed alternative in the US for Rubella and that would mean having a child exposed to a disease that (s)he could have been protected from. Again, I'd like to know how parents who don't opt for vaccines cultured out of aborted fetal cells come to terms with this concept of leaving one's child unprotected from a disease that was preventable? Thank you for the link and I am sure it will help out another parent who may be interested in this topic.

Considering most of the population is vaccinated against these diseases, it is very unlikely that an unvaccinated individual will catch a vaccine preventable disease that they have chose not to vaccinate for.

Ok, that is a good point. However, we are living in a society where more and more parents are choosing not to vaccinate at all. The protection by the herd argument is certainly losing weight nowadays and is only going to be less of a protection in the future.

I did link to a UK site BUT the info is for the US. The parents who put up the site researched for the US as well so I thought it might help those who argue against the vax.

Am I missing something then, is there an alternative to Rubella and Hep A in the US? I so hope that mabye my brain is just not reading info properly...lol

Also, regarding chicken pox, there doesn't seem to be any alternative at all even outside the US, is that right?

How did those of you who do vax but do not allow the vaxes from aborted fetal cells find your child's doctor? I'm having a hard time finding a doc that is willing to deal with me as they perceive me to be the difficult parent....grrr God forbid a parent is informed, suddenly you are difficult because you don't put blind trust into the medical community. So frustrating!

They already think I'm nuts for researching, but I keep telling them with all the things that we're prone to on my side of the family, and Autism spectrum, Celiac Disease (seemingly hand in hand) and Gulf War Illness.... I can't help but be overly cautious.

I'm having to look for a Ped as we speak, and I haven't a clue where to begin other than asking my MIL or picking the ones at the hospital where I will deliver, and praying they understand.

Immune Globulin is available in the US but it only lasts 3 months or so.
Hep A has very recently been added to the list of immunizations here in my area.

So this would protect against Rubella but would need to be administered every 3 months?

This is an entirely new territory for me because I honestly did not know that these type of cells were in vaccines, it's not like the doctors are forthright with this info (and they wonder why I like to be informed).

That's cool that your ped is a church member. Right now we use a Doctor of Osteopathy. He's the closest I can get to willingness to deal with informed parents.

I am thinking of just opening up the phone book and dedicate an afternoon calling offices in my area with my concerns. If they are willing to see my son in person, that is a good sign to me that we are well on the way to finding a doc that suits our family's needs.

Maybe we can provide each other some pointers. I don't think that it is fair that I either vax according to the CDC schedule or kiss regular healthcare goodbye for my boy.

There is a delayed schedule you can go by. I think I found it on the CDC site, or maybe Wikipedia, or perhaps it was the site Jenny McCarthy works with that has stuff to do with Autism spectrum...

We have something similar here in Germany, but from what I hear it will be more difficult with some peds to get an "OK" rather than being reported or super watched over.

Here's the schedule I found that is the "normal schedule"...

Unfortunately with my German skills still being super lacking, I can't just open a phone book or go online and research the local peds, I have to also look into whether they're familiar with autism spectrum and celiac disease, and the we have to go from there. . . So it's left more to my DH who can't do it while he's at work. We haven't "Doc in the box" offices here, just hospitals and private practices, and generally they only are open 8-5pm... so you know where that leaves us atm.
My MIL so doesn't get it, and she is a nurse.

Oh, yes, that pdf file is from that site Jenny works with, Generation Rescue. It is bookmarked and one of the items I need to print off the internet and add to my collection of information I collect as I research aspects of parenting (I am doing this for more than my son's benefit, I have other motives for all the research I am conducting).

I can't really read the German schedule but it does look much better than what I have to deal with in the states. I can't say I'm surprised that a nurse doesn't "get it" and that is why it is so unfortunate. It reminds me of 'those' teachers that are very anti-homeschooling, kwim?

There are homeopathic remedies/nosodes for nearly every disease known to man... So that's what I would use if one of my children got a disease we hadn't vax'd them for.

I have run across some people who use homeopathic "vaccinations" also (I don't have any links for that though).

As far as the child "could have been protected from the disease" if I'd vax'd them... Actually that's up for grabs. Some people are protected and some aren't. The fact is that vaccinations don't always work the way medical people have told us they should. This is another reason to research and each family make their own decisions.

Trust me, I know! I was homeschooled for 6 years hehe

I try to take it in stride. MIL asked if we'd do the Gardasil vaccine if we had a girl, and I think was shocked I said "Heck no!" - just too dangerous, not to mention it doesn't "fully protect" like some folks try say it does.
There's talk of suggesting boys get it as well, or a modified version... that'd be a no for our LO too.

I wonder sometimes if I get the reaction a) because I am American and b) because I was homeschooled... I try to not let folks here know I was, since it is illegal here, and there's just no telling how they'd react if they knew. For all I know, I might be put in an institute and have my head examined...

That is not the case in recent years with more and more parents opting out of vaccinations.

Just this past year, in my area, there was a whooping cough (pertusis) outbreak.
I know vaccines are not the end all for all diseases. There are definite pros and cons. the US has all but erradicated polio because of vaccines. right?

I also agree with jgonz...you must research for yourself and decide based on your own family history and ethics.

My boys are vaccinated according to the pediatrician's schedule and they are all fine. I don't know of any vaccines that have aborted fetus cells in them. I've never heard that b4 this thread. perhaps i am naive.
