  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm Syrian Orthodox and I was just wondering what it means when people say "Vatican Two".

A pastoral council to modernize the Church which led to the Novus Ordo mass that many traditional catholics do not agree. The council is not doctrinal since no revelation was defined as dogma to be taught as doctrine
which Catholics must believe.

Yet Lumen Gentium speaks of the dogmatic constitution of the church:scratch:

Was Vatican II just a dog and pony show:confused:

I wonder why so many people are converting to Catholicism?
Is it for all the right reasons?
Is it because they have had protestants Churches let them down?
I just love the Catholic Church what little I know, however I doubt if i would ever convert.

Because once you realize this is the Church that Christ left us, that he established with his own hands, you really are left with no choice. Many find themselves in this situation and they work through the doctrinal differences they may have with God’s help.

Oh I was not sure if the Catholic Church was the church that Jesus left us.
I do love listening and reading much about the church.

It is and when Protestants come to realize this through their study, this is why they convert.

And, not only through their own study, but also by the prompting of the Holy Spirit and by the power of Jesus' prayer:

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. (John 17:20-23)

Christ created for us one church and desired that all believers be one within that church so that the world may see and believe. In my opinion, the separations that were begun at the Reformation and have continually spiraled unchecked since then are scandalous to us all.

Converts are coming into the church by the Grace of God to fulfill Christ's prayer that we be one. God be praised!

God Bless!

Actually Evee, if you read Romans and Acts and most of the New Testament you will see, if you read carefully, that a Catholic Church is described. Like in the Acts Jerusalem Council when Peter stands up to speak, elders are mentioned. From my knowledge the Protestant church didn't come till the middle ages, and one thing they disliked was the prospect of answering to elders, such as the Pope. Or what about in Romans when Paul comends Sister Pheobe for service to the church? We know from Paul women are not allowed to speak in church, so what could she be? Right now I am on my way out to church, so I can't quote verses, but if you could read the verses below your would see what I mean. Please, remember that you need to do this with an open mind.

The Jersalem Council: Acts 15:6-7
Sister Phoebe: Romans 16:1-2
Women to be silent: 1 Corinthians 14:34

This is just the tip of the iceberg that killed the Titanic, so just ask if you need more.

The Theological Commision makes reference to its declaration on March 6, 1964 in taking conciliar custom into consideration & also 'the pastoral purpose of the council which defines as binding on the church things in matters of faith & morals,' etc. The council did not intend to wish, or actualize any dogmatic pronouncement of any kind. It clearly emphasized that it was a pastoral council & not a dogmatic one.

Bold emphasis is mine.

And after these past few weeks after my confirmation, and after watching the Passion, I can't agree with you more Shelb. Right on!

Has anyone ever noticed some commonalities of Catholics who leave the Church? It seems they leave for one of two reasons, 1) they are cradle Catholics who don't understand a lick of faith in general, let alone the Catholic faith, or 2) they want to do something that they know is wrong (e.g. divorce, pursue a homosexual lifestyle, engage in premarital sex), and they want a minister of faith to tell them it's alright.

Ironically, the people who leave the Protestant churches to come to Catholicism are always the best theologians, the closest with Christ, and the most searching for truth. Protestantism is like some kind of glorious proving ground for believers to build themselves up before coming home.

These seem to be my observations, at least.
