This is a hard subject for me to ask about but something I have never understood. If the atonement means that Jesus paid the full price for our sins, then how does being dead for three days substitute for being dead for eternity? Thanks.

Very good question. As a man Jesus lay in the grave for three days, but Jesus was also a divine person. As the divine and eternal “Word” Jesus transcends time and space. Jesus experienced being separated from the Godhead, and this is something we aren't able to understand because we're limited beings. But this separation was something which transcended time and space, and thus it is something which is equivalent to the second death. So don't worry, this isn't easy to comprehend or grasp, in fact it is impossible for us to fully understand what was at stake for Jesus and the Godhead.

It is true that God cannot "die", but in a way that's exactly what happened.
