Greetings all,
First of all apologies if this question is too specific, but I couldn't find a better subforum to ask it.
Two years ago I read an article in Turkish titled "The Cult of St. George in the Ottoman Empire" that examined the veneration of the saint Muslim Ottomans and have been interested in learning more about him ever since.
Interestingly, St. George's feastday is still marked by thousands of Muslim Turks who flock to the monastery dedicated to him on an island off the coast of Istanbul.
The procession itself on this island is religious syncresism at its "best" as thousands of people from all over Turkey who know (or remember; since their ancestors were most certainly Christian) next to nothing about Christianity walk to the top of a steep hill on the island, many of them barefoot out of respect, to light candles and pray for the intercession of St. George.
So, I'm interested in knowing various denomination's perception of St. George, what he represents and perhaps even his "localization" where you live. Any further local information or your personal knowledge would be great appreciated.
