  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This November I (a devout atheist) will be getting married to my lovely agnostic fiance.

We will be having a completely nonreligious ceremony.

For those of you who are against gay marriage, are you also against the marriage I am about to undertake?

I suppose they would be, if your betrothed is a dude.

Your situation is exactly what my atheist wife and I did 22 years ago. And our non-religious marriage has lasted a lot longer than many others. Please accept my congratulations to you both, and enjoy many happy years together!

bah marriage isn't a christian specific thing, infact like many things from christianity it comes from pagan traditions, similar to, easter, christmas, the virgin birth, sacrifice on the cross or stake.

my marriage isn't too happy at the moment but that is most likely a passing thing as in most marriages, so good luck to you and I wish you all the best
congrats

Mine/ours was six years ago. And I've yet to meet any Christian who has a problem with our Godless heathen marriage.

We also have two gay friends, who are Christian, and were recently married in a Christian ceremony. Strangely, some people have a problem with that God-blessed union.

Anyway, congrats to the OP!

It seems like you are trolling for negative attention.

I think it's an attempt to pin Christians down on what they approve of and what they don't. It's a good idea to try to understand the opposing view, wouldn't you agree?

Christians tend to be vocal about what they do and don't like, and its usually consistent with what the Bible has to say about what God does and does not like. Christians are a pretty open book as far as that goes.

Sometimes its a good idea to try to understand the opposing view, but most of the time its a waste of time.

Actually, I find that what Christians tend to be vocal about is usually inconsistent, not just with the Bible, but with each other.

So as a Christian do you like slavery? levirate marriages? Burnt offerings? The bible says God loves all these things

That actually doesn´t match my experience.
Right from the top of my head I could give you a couple of christian doctrines that are irreconcilable with each other. If both of them are reconcilable with the bible, that would shed an interesting light on the bible.

Wait - are you recommending me to quit wasting my time with trying to understand your views?

As a Christian I like girls in white dresses and blue satin sashes, among other things.

I'm not against gay marriage, or non-Christian marriage, I just wanted to say congratulations :D

Your marriage is 100% valid to me! Not that that means much around here ;)

Alright, I'll rephrase my question.

Is my marriage comparable to homosexual marriages, and why or why not?

If it is, would you advocate making it illegal for us to get married?

First off congratulations to both you and your Fiancé. Secondly - To each their own.

Thirdly being your Fiancé is not a devout Christian (correct me if I'm misunderstanding agnostic) and if she continues on as an agnostic then possibly you will have a great marriage.

But if I may pose a question or several questions, what happens if she does become a devout Christian? That without a doubt she starts believing in God and living for Him? Will that change your marriage? How will you expect your children to be raised? What if she wants them raised as Christians? If your future wife decides to bring God into your home are you going to be ok with that or will this be a problem for you?
