As far as I understand it, a laicised priest is one who has chosen to leave the priesthood. Common reasons would include wanting to marry or getting divorced. A defrocked priest is one who has been forced to leave the priesthood; in effect, he's been fired from the Church.

My priest said that if he married an Orthodox to a non-Orthodox, he would be defrocked, so it seems to be a punishment for breaking canon law.

I do not think it is uncommon or exceptional for any denomination to expect more from clergy than the laity.

It also might be easier to tell you what exactly the position of your friend is if we knew the exact details of what exactly happened. I am sorry to hear of his troubles.

I don't really know the Canon's on this subject, but if that is the case, it is not held up. I know way to many Orthodox who have married non Orthodox.

But on the Priest to laity issue...Priests should be how do you say, well let's just say they should act better. But also on a side note, it is very hard to be a Priest, because the devil works extra hard on them. I mean think about it, he can decieve hundreds or thousands (millions in some cases) just by decieving one Priest, or even Bishop.

Also on another side note, in ossuaries (where they keep the bones of Monks) they write on the foward the sign of the cross. Well in some cases of the skull of Priests, they did not have to write the sign of the cross on their forhead because it is embedded on their forhead already from when they were annointed when they were ordained!! Amazing.

They would be married to Roman Catholics or other Christians. If a priest married an Orthodox to a Hindu or a Muslim or a Jew he would probably be defrocked, according to what my priest said.
