• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can someone please share what they know about how caffiene affects a person with bipolar disorder? Aside from impacting one's sleep patterns, are there other reasons why a bipolar person should avoid caffiene? Does caffiene affect a bipolar person differently than it affects a person without the disorder?

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I do have Bipolar Disorder. I can drink caffeine like a lot when I am on my meds, I have found.

However, when my doctor chooses to put me on less meds, caffeine speeds me up real bad. When that happens, I just don't feel myself, since I am manic most of the time. For me, that means I think, speak, and hear faster. Taking caffeine speeds me up more, and therefore, it is too strong for me.

But, when I have a little headache, then some times a small amount of caffeine wether in a drink of over the counter medicine is helpful to me.

I hope this helps. :)

Caffeine is a stimulant as others have indicated. I choose to use it in limited quantities.

Well said. Wether a substance is found in nature, manufactured by man, sold over the counter or by prescription only, we should all should some responsability in making informed decisions about that which we choose willfully to consume into our bodies.

I have recently had a lot of problems with caffiene. I was just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder for the second time (with a mis-diagnosis of major depression in between...argh) and for me at least, caffiene can make me manic (if only for a little while while it's in effect) in a very bad way. I try to stay away from it when i'm feeling even slightly on the high side of normal. Even when i'm depressed I only have about one cup of coffee a day and it's usually half-caf. Hard for me because I LOVE coffee and espresso, but better for my in the longrun.
