  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Somebody showed me that movie called 'The Secret', which purportedly shows that the more you think about something, the more likely you are to get it, and it just got me angry how many people misunderstand the nature of quantum mechanics in order to try to justify their mysticism du jour with it. Thoughts?

Nothing new.

I'm sure if we go back to Newton we'd already find people using his science to justify silly mysticism.

Yeah, this has been going on for a while. Fritjof Capra anyone?

And that "What the Bleep do we know" film too.

Also, I'm not sure whether to include Omega point theory in this - I agree with the idea of an upper limit on the amount of information the universe can contain, but equating the Omega point with God and eternal life the way Tipler does seems a tad far-fetched.

Quantum mysticism? There's a new one. Mneh. Can't say I'm surprised though. It's only a question of time before someone makes a religion out of it. For power, sex, money or all three of those. That's usually the reason anyway.

That movie (What the Bleep Do We Know) is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. It was already bad, but when 'Ramtha', the 35,000 year old spirit warrior showed up via JZ Knight's channeling...

And at present, The Oprah has done more for The Secret than any other source. I think she still has a one-hour show on XM devoted to it, and it is extremely irritating to listen to people's anecdotes, and the host patting them on the back all the way to fantasy-land. Aside from the sheer idiocy, I find this ideology even more offensive for being materialism wrapped in spirituality.....much like prosperity gospel preachers.

I feel the same way about things like this I do about stupid books like the Da Vinci Code - people who take things like this seriously are an embarrassment to the species.

Funny how so many did. It's pretty evident it's just a load of garbage. An entertaining read I hear. But still just fictional.

I guess we can say human beings have a history of being gullible...

I think this is another example of what you are discussing.

_44681384_crystalskull_bm_226.jpg

The mystical crystal skulls (portrayed in new Indy film) are modern fakes, there was a good documentary about them on UK television this week ( LINK ). What interested me was the fact that the mystical nutters could turn this blatant forgery to their own advantage. They claim that because the skulls were cut with modern tools (i.e. tooling methods developed since the late 19th century) it shows they must have been created by space visitors and are somehow an intricate computer if all thirteen are placed together.

So the skulls all appear in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The tools needed to cut the skulls were developed in the late 19th century

The skulls shown to be cut with modern tools during investigation in the 21st century.

Nutter claim extra terrestrials cut the skulls: Well they must have used late 19th century human technology.

You think space travellers would have moved on from diamond cutting wheels.

The forgery story is bad enough, but I'm still depressed over finding out that people actually LIKE the new Indy film *twitch*twitch*

Again, embarrassment to the species.

It seems to me that a large swath of humanity not only likes magical mysticism, but needs it to function. If only they would open their eyes, there’s enough wonder in world without religious fiction.

Hehe, I bravely admit I liked it. In a way.

I had a great laugh, that is. ^_^

Again, embarrassment to the species.
