  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was reading the paper at my dad's today and read an article that tore my heart out. Some person tossed out newborn lab cross puppies in different areas of Delta BC some pups were found alive and freezing no doubt and some had died. The pups that survived were taken in by foster familes. And they will be adopted out to the right people. Shame on the person that did this I hope they are regretting that this happened and will be charged

Yes there are shelters everywhere, but if they are like the one here, they will lie on the telephone and tell any caller they have no empty cages, when in fact they do! I have been there on 2 occasions and have seen the empty cages or kennels and been standing right there when they lied to a caller! Then they rant and rave when people tie dogs to their buildings outside or whatever! So spaying/neutering needs to be a law for pet ownership! That is the only way to stop overpopulation. Too many people get cats/dogs that will never once take them to the vet. They should not even be allowed to have a pet. These are the same people who buy the cheapest generic pet food and don't buy toys for their pets, or get cheap, unsafe ones, and would never read a book on pet care. They are also the ones who drive around looking for signs for free pets, and because they got it free, they do not even value it's life,or the quality of care they give it.

That sounds awful, but you shouldn't make assumptions about all animal shelters based on your experiences with one. It's unfair and a detriment to animals and shelters everywhere. So please don't let it taint your opinion of all animal shelters. They are usually run on too little funding, too little staff, and too many animals. Most are very good-intentioned, but it's easy for some to backslide. The shelter I have worked at for three summers is doing so right now. The board members fought for 5 years to get that place built and now it will likely be closed or overrun within a year. Also, try to remember the circumstances the shelter may be under. Perhaps they are no- or reduced-kill and/or a semi-private institution. In that case, while it may seem wrong to us, they are allowed to make their own rules. Besides, that's how most places manage to be no-kill...they deny entrance. Many county or state shelters also contract with the local government to run animal control, as my shelter did, because the funding for that is so much greater than just as a humane society. We couldn't tell people we didn't have room because we ran animal control, but I could certainly imagine a situation in a shelter running animal control where they are required to leave cages open for the officers in case they bring in animals. There are so many different things that could come into play. Yes, the people there could just be making stuff up, but honestly if you were likely to be faced with putting down those puppies (because without the mother, it's extremely difficult and taxing for a small, understaffed organization to commit 2 months to an animal that cannot be adopted) you might just say you didn't have space to save yourself. Anyway...just don't let your experience with that one place spoil your view of animal shelters. They have a purpose and do a service for the communities, people, and animals they interact with every day. And if it truly is as you say, go to the board of directors, go to the county commissioners, start a petition and get it changed. Simply being furious changes nothing and doesn't help those animals.

Someone found a little of pups at the dump here. They are cute but no chance of any help because this town has a 99% kill rate. It makes me sick! Carol and I worked volunteered at the shelter for a year and we had a 0% kill rate for adoptable nice dogs.

I hate to hear stories like that, but it happens so often. It just breaks my heart that people aren't more responsible. For goodness sakes, don't have a female dog for a pet, not get her spayed, and either expect her not to get pregnant or not have a plan for dealing with a litter of puppies. It hurts my heart.

My 3 year old dog (the bigger one) was the product of a pregnant dog that was dumped on someone's property. Thank goodness the people she was dumped on had the heart to find homes for the dogs.

I work part-time in a pet resort kennels. We have two big Akita's that have been there since the beginning of August. Sweet dogs but aggresive around other animals. I feel sorry for them because it seems like the owners are not taking responsibility. Unfornatley things like this happen all over the place. We have three cats. We can't really afford to take on another animal. We love the dogs and cats but there is only so much we can do. If anyone can make donations to these shelters or help out in anyway that is what they need the most. This section caught my attention.

That's good news! I hope they'll be able to enforce the rule about them not owning an animal again.

Over the summer we fostered 4 puppies that were dumped on the side of the road here in July (We live in the Arizona desert, it hits 115 in the shade here in July).

I am registered to foster with my local humane society and happened to be dropping off some papers for my own dogs shot updates when Animal Control brought them in. There was a respitory infection going around the shelter, and they asked if I would foster them because if they stayed, they may die.

We bottle-fed them and kept them at our house for foster until they were old enough for their shots. There was a little one that it was touch and go with for a while, but he made it. They all did, and got great *forever* homes. They ended up being Border Collie mixes. They were the sweetest little things. Our shelter here is always full to the brim. This is a big agricultural area, and no one ever spays or nueters their dogs. We foster as much as we can. We actually just talked about going and taking a dog over Christmas, because I want at least one of them to have a good one.

That is wonderful news! I am glad that momma and her puppies are back together! (I can only imagine how excited momma dog was when she was reunited with her babies!!!)

And I'm glad to hear what happened to the owner - that person doesn't need any pets if that is how much they care and look after God's creatures!!
