Psalms need to be taken in context with the entire psalm. You can't just pull an isolated verse out and expect to get a unique revelation from it without reading the entire context. Psalms are actually some of the easier pieces of scripture to exegesis and many times are used as teaching aids. Most psalms read in a way where it poses a problem, it then spins the problem around and then it wraps it up In a conclusion. verse 1-15 is the problem. the psalmist see corruption in the walls of his city and sees his own friends become enemies. The psalm turns around in verse 16 when it says "As for me..." Where he goes on saying that he will be true to God and to curse his enemies. It wraps up in verse 22-23 which pretty much just sums up the entire point which is basically to stay true to God and he will stay true to you and his enemies will be destroyed ending with the line "But I will trust in you." You can certainly get revelation from psalms but you can also read into them too much. This Psalm should be taken in a more general context instead of specific saying that when you put your trust and faith in God he will protect you but don't be so naive to think there will be no problems. This psalm shows that although the psalmist had great faith in God his opening words are very dark and alone reaching out for help which shows us the Psalmist himself was not removed from all danger even though his latter words suggest otherwise.

Looking at the verses before and after:

21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.



Previously in this Psalm we read that David was betrayed by a close acquaintance he knew from the temple. It really hurts when we get deceived by someone we consider a brother in faith. David here is pointing out how sweet and nice the man seemed, yet he had plans of war he was hiding from David.

David is telling us to trust God with whatever happens as a result of evildoers who are not truly serving God, comforting us that God will sustain us through difficult times in life. He'll keep us strong so we don't change our own minds about God and follow those who would lead us another way. God will always support us when we know we're doing His will, and never forsake us.

And finally, David asks God to cut short the days of the evil ones who stir up strife. Nevertheless, he will trust in God. :amen:

Heres a few to compare, thought these showed the same sort of thing, just how they are worded

Prov 12:5 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

Psalm 55:21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

Even as it shows this...

Prov 12:6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

He delivers from the mouth too

Ezek 34:10 ... For I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

Prov 12:7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.

Psalm 55:2 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 55:3 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Just as it shows bloody men (in the above) its shows its the words of the wicked (in the below) being that which lies in wait for blood

Shown with deceit (pertaining to) the counsels of the wicked also

Prov 12:5 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

So again bloody and deceitful (together)

Psalm 53:3... bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Compare these two...
Prov 12:6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

Psalm 72: 14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

Then these two...


Jerm 9:8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.

They did that with Jesus, and taking counsel in how they might

Mat 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

Luke 11:54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

Jerm 5:26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

Which is their devices, as the tongue is compared to a bow, a sword or an arrow

Psalm 37:14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

So they are left with trying to falsely accuse your conversation in their own feignedness. Pretending to be honest (even in their questions) as Jesus could perceive their hearts. These sometimes using flatteries, or words as smooth as butter but their intents in conversation are laden with deceitfulness having only a desire to entangle in talk and seek to accuse. I think we have all seen this on christian boards, Jesus encountered the same in religious spheres of influence. Even tells us to consider him who endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye become weary and faint in your own minds. I sorta see this as applying to exactly this sort of thing too.
