  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When was the Protestant canon form/formalised? And, by whom?

Wow. What a great question.

To tell you the truth, I've always taken it for granted that the Protestants just took the Catholic one, sans the Apocrypha.

Thank you for asking the question.
It is going to be interesting to me to listen in on and learn from this discussion.

Not to be too rude, Mr. Bible darling, but suddenly it seems you've put on some weight.

That's because I get a bit thicker when we speak of the Bible used by Protestant Christians.
In addition to the 39 books of the Hebrew Bible, Protestant Christians also include the 27 books of the New Testament in their Bibles. And, just like the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament owns many names, including the Christian Bible as well as the Greek Bible, because all of the documents are written in Greek. But for now, let's just call them the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, Okie Dokie?
The 27 books of the New Testament, along with their scholarly abbreviations, are as follows:

Effectively in the 16th century when Protestant leaders (beginning with Luther) placed the Deuterocanonical books in their own appendix between the Old and New Testaments. In most Protestant Bibles the Deuterocanonical books seemed to have phased out by no later than the 19th century, though I don't think there was any real monolithic act that accomplished this. For example I'm under the impression that the Deuterocanonicals are retained--at least in some sense--in the Church of England (correct me if I'm wrong), as far as modern German Bibles go I don't know that much about them so I don't know to what degree some may have dropped the Deuterocanonicals entirely and which may retain them.

the Septuagint?
Nope, can't be that. The Setuagint was put together a couple hundred years before Christ came incarnate on the earth, entering time and history.

The question should be when was the EO canon formed/formalized and by whom. I know when God formalized my canon (the answer is in the link you can't access lol).

Fisheaters says it happened. Which is one place where I, at least, would FOR SURE expect to see it denied. The Canon of Scripture
Wiki is an opinionated site.
Scholars disagree on its (the council's) authenticity.

I don't know what or who Fisheaters is. The septuagint isn't accepted by Protestants.

The Septuagint includes some books not found in the Hebrew Bible, see Development of the Jewish Bible canon for details. After the Reformation, many Protestant Bibles began to follow the Jewish canon and exclude the additional books. Roman Catholics, however, include some of these books in their canon while Eastern Orthodox Churches use all the books of the Septuagint except the Psalms of Solomon.[27] Anglican lectionaries also use all of the books except Psalm 151, and the full Authorized (King James) Version (following the Geneva Bible, 1560) includes these additional books in a separate section labelled the "Apocrypha".
