I forget where I heard this, but it's worth repeating.
What's the best food on earth? Lobster. It crawls on the ocean floor.
What's next best? Shrimp. Swims a little higher. Then fish.
What's next? Meat. Beef, venison, chicken, etc., land-dwelling creatures.
Next best? Fruits and vegetables. Grow just a little above land.
What's the next worst food? Flying creatures. Pigeons. Worse, scavengers that are generally high-fliers.
Next worst? Airplane food. Yech.
Next worst? The stuff they give to astronauts.
Obviously, as you get farther away from the center of the earth, the food gets worse.
It follows that by the time you got to another planet, the food would be SO bad that it couldn't possibly support life.
Case closed.
