  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have been thinking about profanity a lot lately. I have searched the forums, but I have found a lot of old threads filled with what seems to me to be illogical posts. I decided to start a new thread to get most of what I am thinking out of the way first, so that I hopefully won't have to deal with a lot of illogical nonsense.

I do not cuss. I have been taught my whole life that cussing is wrong. The American society, in general, says that it is wrong. We can see that in the fact that there are television censors. But, why are certain words wrong to even mention?

A lot of people will say that words have bad meanings, and therefore we must not use them. That is not usually absolute. For example, most people are lax with the word ****. **** means feces, dung, whatever. It is often used to express anger, pain, surprise, etc. It seems to have at least those two meanings, and neither one seem to be bad. We all, as humans, have to use the bathroom to rid ourselves of waste - ****. We all feel anger, pain, etc., and we all have our ways of expressing that. Some people do this by mentioning the word ****. Some people mention a less tolerated word that begins with an S. This "S word" also means feces, dung, etc. Why is considered more wrong? Why do people get upset at even the mentioning of the word when they say that the meaning is what is bad?

Many Christians will quote Bible verses that tell us to rid ourselves of filthy language, not to have evil talk, and to avoid godless chatter. Nowhere in the Bible, however, does it say that certain words are bad. Who said that even the mention of certain words is filthy? It seems to be our culture who is illogically saying that some words are just bad to mention.

I have seen other posts on this site saying things like, "Would you talk to God like that?" and, "Do you feel guilty about using those words?" These are not fair questions for some. I used to feel extremely guilty to even hear certain words. That was so just because my parents taught me that they were wrong. A person who does not know English would not feel guilty about hearing English cuss words. The question about using the words with a conversation with God can be answered the same way - if you were taught that those words were wrong you might feel bad about using them before God. If they are wrong to use, you shouldn't use them before God (we are before God all the time, anyways...but that's beside the point). If they are not wrong, it should not matter if you used them while talking to God.

What do you think? If I have already stated a response to what you are going to say, please do not waste your time unless you are going to add something new. I do not want to go in circles with this.

Thanks.

Wow...I didn't realize that I used a word that is unacceptable to this forum. The censored word starts with a C, if you are curious.

This is another reason that this topic bothers me - some words are accepted more than others, but still not accepted by other people. I say the "C word" all the time and the people I am around don't mind. But, there are people who don't like it (like the forum administrators appearantly).

So, if you think that cussing is wrong, where do you draw the line? Is the "C word" alright? If so, then what about the words dung and feces? What if I fell down and said "Feces!"? The meaning there would be "Ouch!" so if you said that it's the meaning behind it, then you would have to say that "Ouch!" is wrong and we must not express pain. (??)

I just don't say words that denote elimination. Nothing wrong with saying "ouch" that I can see, so go ahead and say it! There, that was easy, wasn't it! ;)

About 2 months ago I closed my metal garage door on my heel and it scraped the first 50 layers of skin off my heel (I'm exagerating here, but you get what I mean). First I was afraid of the pain and bleeding, so I just kept saying "Oh, God, help me" and you know what? He did! I felt no pain until about the 3rd week and bleeding was slow and minimal. It was a very bad wound, but God protected me and comforted me and all without saying anything dirty or obscene! Try it, it works!

I generally don't see any problems with profanity at all, unless the profanity denotes something derogatory (for example, calling a woman the "b-word." Otherwise, profanity doesn't bother me. I don't think most of the other 4-letter words are bad, because they do not have any offensive meanings. There is nothing obscene about feces, for example. They are a healthy way to express anger, pain, or frustration, and can, if used sparingly, have a stress-relieving effect on people who use them in times of need. Obviously, they would not have any bans on these words in the Bible, because these words are all in English, which the Bible was not written in originally.

Apart from the perceptions that people have of those who use profanity, I think the flaw in using profanity is in it's generic quality. In the interests of accurate communication it would be better to use a word specifically created for the task and conveying accurately the thoughts of the speaker. Saying, "I have hurt my foot.", is better than saying, "Oh ****, Oh ****", and jumping around holding your foot. People know exactly what you are talking about in the first instance.

If I remember correctly, when I was in high school my teacher taught us that the origin of 'bad words' was based on Anglican words or someone opposed to the Anglicans, so when they took over that opposing group, they relegated their terminology to be offensive and bad (in order to promote the superior groups language)
It went something like that...I'm going to try to look it up and if/when I find something along those lines I will post it :)

Language is just a form of expression... i have teachers that use profanity on a regular basis. it has become most people's vocabulary. i don't think that swearing is going to condemn anyone to hell- at least i hope not. if profanity is something that you feel is wrong, then dont say it. but there are a lot worse things people can do besides swearing so let the cussing continue...

May I just make a suggestion to you(because of Christ)? If you love Christ, why would you want to use words the bible objects to?There are people who cannot see that it is wrong for Christians especially,to use offensive language. The men and women who follow Christ, would not dream of offending would-be-followers of our Lord;we have been asked by Him,to tell unbelievers of His great love for everyone. To be told this with even using one +++++word, would be turning people away, rather than witnessing for the Lord.I do not know you,but I am sure you are a very nice person to know.Sincere greetings Emmy.

Actually, from what I understand, taking the Lord's name in vain is not saying "oh my god" etc...it actually means doing things in His name that would not please Him.

Ummmm...yeah, right. Sure it does.

Not to mention that if god REALLY wanted to protect you, he would've stopped you from closing the door on your foot.

What words, precisely, does the bible object to? None of the more popular profanities are even mentioned in it - so it obviously doesn't object to them. As for offending people...it's not possible. People take offence, and that's their problem - not mine. If somebody says it offends them to see someone in a green sweater, should we all stop wearing them? Of course not, because that's THEIR problem. Similarly if someone takes offence at profanity - it's THEIR problem, not the speaker's.

agreed.
I think about the "f" and "b" words here...

but concerning BOC's question," But, why are certain words wrong to even mention?"...

Well, "bad" words will continue to be recognized as "bad" until we all as a society decide these group of words aren't...but then we'll come up with more to meet there negetive connotations (to those that apply) ...
...Basically "bad" words are staples of a pagan, so by association is what gets me. How can one tell the difference between a Christian and a Pagan is both sound the same. Now Im not saying you or anyone (will) curse like a sailor (I know you said you don't curse). So whats the mishap in stubing you toe and saying **** ****? Well, thoughts become actions which become habits and so on...I didn't say a single "cuss" word till I was seventeen. This year in college, hearing everyone around me, I can't help but have b****, or other low tier curse words. So its kinda like going on the path to "wrong"...
