  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That would be rather difficult and would probably kill the game. You'd have to replace speech audio files (Which are often specially coded so they cant be messed with) with censored versions of the original. Which would mean you'd have to listen to EVERY SINGLE AUDIO FILE IN THE GAME and bleep out the swear words.

Save yourself the trouble and read the ESRB.

Or better yet, get over it and ignore it

for Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood I could probably do it in under an hour. The only character that ever swears with a couple of exceptions is the guy you control. But yeah, the language ruins most games for me. The thing is, all the games are are exciting and well done usually tend to be mature games. Ones that are not mature are often dumbed down as if to a level where children can have fun with them.

A lot of games add language to deepen characters. If a guy is in the middle of war, sees his friend get shot and says "Oh that stinks!" ...ya know. That doesn't sound realistic. But if he lets out a curse, that makes the game seem more real. If I saw a friend get shot, I would curse and scream.

Agreed, it detracts from the realism of it. You dont buy those games for the wholesome nature.

eh no, the only mods I know of that deal with anything like that put more of that stuff into the game, not remove it. Lots of games I won't play due to content, but lots of other games worth playing, so play those.

Yeah, I understand the concept of adding an element of realism to characters in games. Regardless of the intent, I would rather not hear the language. I have been fiddling with Crysis and Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood and if I spent some more time I could probably just generate silence over the specific part of the file that has the profanity in it. That, truncate it (e.g. "Give me some ***-**** fire!" turns into "Give me some ... fire!"), or completely silence the clip. If I get around to doing that, I would be happy to either tell someone what files to modify/delete, or simply give them a folder to copy into their directory.

Yeah, you could always do that, make your own mod and distribute it, usually pretty simple. You could even wind up starting a mod team if it appeals to you, then target some games to mod and clean up then distribute.

Heh, I don't know that I'd curse and scream, but I certainly would be overwhelmed. I'd probably just stand their in stunned silence, unable to thing.

But anyway, I agree. I don't mind swearing that truly is added for the realism. There is a level, t hough, where it goes beyond realism and into the realm of gratuitous. I know it's not a game, but an example is the movie Boondock Saints. I simply couldn't watch the movie because there was so much swearing, in my mind, it went beyond realism and into swearing for the sake of swearing.

I've never really encountered this in a game, but then again, the games likely to hit that aren't really in genres I enjoy. I like fantasy RPGs, and those often have little or no swearing. Stuff like GTA and the more extreme shooters have never really appealed to me.

Profanity won't kill you, but you know what will?
Being fat.
Being fat will cut years off of your life.

You can't get addicted to profanity, but you know what you can get addicted to?
Drugs, Porn, Sex,Food

You know how many times profanity is mentioned in the bible?
zero times
There is nothing like it in the ten commandments, nor is it in man's laws.
You can say profanity and you will not get fined, warned, arrested or sued.

So why is it such a big deal?
Why is it a deal at all?

The easiest way to remove profanity from games would be to modify the sound files containing said profanity. Many companies strongly recommend that users do not ever modify these files. Even more companies would be rather upset if you started to distribute modified versions of these files. That is why these companies often create specialized container formats for their games, or hide the content another way.

Overall, the public distribution of such a mod on a commercial game would not be a good idea.

I've never been able to figure that part out. It's completely nonsensical with no reason behind why the words are bad. I bet it started out as a gentlemen's bet between guys as to who could convince the most people that their word was evil. Obviously the man who chose intercourse and feces lost.

Anyone who is worried about hearing profanity in a game where you are killing people, needs to take a long hard look at their priorities.

ROFL... you win the thread.

I can understand wanting to filter profanity out of say a Mario game but a war game in which your goal is to mercilessly mow down hordes of people... It's like shooting a squirt gun at a forest fire.

Exactly. There is a reason why certain words are "profane" and it boils down solely to the fact that society has deemed them so. Nothing happens when "bad" words are said, other than a listener might be "offended." They won't be able to tell you why... it is just a social conditioning.

Such games that have profanity in them should be avoided. In the Bible, filthy language is one of the things that should be avoided at all costs. It is regarded, more or less, as a sin;playing such games corrupts our minds and before you know it you will be cursing just like those characters in the games. When choosing the games you play always be cautious and discriminative of games that have profanity, some form of nudity and violence. It might be difficult to stay away from such games but it is for your own good. Remember, we are NOT supposed to conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed in the renewing of our minds. Let has have the mind of Christ when choosing the games we play. Most Sport-related games are good but not all of them. May God help us to make the right decisions .

However, video games are hardly the largest, or most influential, source of "profanity". Children usually learn every form of "profanity" from other children and it is social situations where "profanity" is most widespread. I admit that some of these children may learn "profanity" from the media, but there is certainly no dearth of "profanity" in the film, music, and television industries. Social pressures are much more influential to children than some game counsel.

They add profanity into games to make the dialogue more realistic.
I mean, lets face it people, not everybody is a straight edged, clean shaven, clean minded pottymouthless person. Everybody cusses, and if you say you haven't, then quit lying to yourself.
