  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have bad habits with writing, I'll go and go for hours or days upon end and then stop for days and then re-start the entire story, never mind how much I got done.

And then I realized, awhile ago, why I've been having difficulty: The first few chapters, especially the beginning because that's what draws in the reader and I am forever unsatisfied with any way I begin it. And mostly, I just want to dive right into the story, forgo the build up and just get to the ending and also I want this series to be perfect. After all, I've been working on it since I was in high school and it's changed so much.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem? Does anyone else have bad writing habits or anything similar?

"...why not do it in two separate stages here, first write out the whole thing, warts and all, then simply rewrite the beginning once more..." suggested the goblin knowing that editing while composing was like mixing up two different parts of the brain, and somehow reminded of that famous line something worth reading twice is ever worth writing twice, then he added "...but I'll be honest and if I do note a trend here, I fear it to be one away from standard books towards online interactive content instead, and by that I mean not only upon forumland here but also that blogword too, and even one's facebook wall, btw I can help you get an online readership if you like but first you have to put yourself in your online reader's shoes, starting by pulling down that wall between your posts and your writings, why so, because those readers are just like you I imagine they want online interactive content, in short they want "in"...", the goblin paused for breath and then restarted anew "...yes, an all too evident madness isn't it, where these readers, your readers here if you can pull it off then, will both find you and follow you across forumland solely by way of your posts, um.., provided that your posts are imaginatively pulling enough that is...", but most people knew that goblins were not to trusted now, whereupon the goblin just smiled "...well yes, I guess we're not to be trusted then, ah, but we're not to be feared neither..."

Thank you, fleamailman! I am curious about this online readership. Maybe if I got more feedback and what not, I'd be able to keep with one version.

"...ah now, are you on any writer's forums..." inquired the goblin, adding "...how about you slowly airing your work somewhere online then, as that too would stop you from repeatedly restarting your work, if and where your readers were already reading it that is...", in fact the goblin had about 3000posts by now upon a hidden storethread, all matched and ready for exhibiting, but since he was across many forums too he could then repost those posts in dribs and drabs from that storethread from different start points to those forums then thus quickly building up a forum readership then, because each thread then looked different, adding "...I imagine that there would be quite a few authors out there who would like to have an online readership like mine that went into thousands of hits per day, but not me now, no I don't want this readership at all, so what does a livewriter like myself actually want instead of a massive readership here, well how about a big replyship now, yes, it's all about feeding to be fed today, for what else can someone who is anonymous like myself get out of this, so if I just get read by readers I fail in what I do..."

Confidence. Have it in what you wrote and keep going to the end, then start from the beginning with your re-write. We write to re-write, so it's fine to change it. Just complete the entire story.

Another problem is the inability to erase the fat. When you're trying to make something work in a story, and you're putting too much time into it, consider deleting it all together to move the story along. Letting go of all that time spent on a page or paragraph is hard, but necessary and so freeing.

Another problem is you're blocked and don't see your middle and your end. So you procrastinate by starting over instead of admitting that you're stuck. If this is the case, stop writing and enjoy life. In doing so you will find inspiration to continue the story. If you're not blocked, then complete your story in your head, then write a brief outline of your middle and end as you see it, even if you find yourself changing it as you go along. At least the foundation will be laid for you to build on.

The best to you,
