Problems with a 6000 year old earth.

How old of an Earth? The offical position of the Church I attend is the Gap theory. So the earth can be any age you want it to be. But according to the gap theory God destroyed everything, except for a very small remenant and started all over again about 12,970 year ago.

There are things I wonder about in the geology record. Esp. deposits that are organic in nature: Oil, Coal, Limestone. I wonder sometimes how long it would take to create them.

I'm going to ask for a clarification here:

So you accept that the earth *could* be billions of years old; but 12,970 years ago God wiped the "slate" clean, is this correct?

Is this starting over again, Adam and Eve, or Noah, that you are referring to?

That still wouldn't make any sense, all of the species and subspecies (that have evolved, mind you) still couldn't have reproduced enough to create the current diversity there currently is on earth in 12,000 years.
There just ISN'T enough time allowed for that.

All the YEC's ask why we don't see evolution occurring today... evolution is a SLOW process, our life span is only about 75 years (give or take a few), we aren't alive long enough to really witness it it happening.

I would really like to know how you gather that the earth as we know it started 12,xxx years old. If the bible is taken literally it is 6,000 years old... if you reject that and look to science it is 4.5 billion (give or take a few million years in there).. where does 12,xxx come from? (i am not being facetious, i really want to know)

As far as I know they take the verse about 'to God a day is a thousand years and a thousand years is as a day' (ask someone else to give you the reference, I don't know which verse it is) at the most literal interpretation possible and say that each creation day is a thousand years long.

1 day = 1000 years, 6 days = 6000 years, 6000 creation + 6000 post creation (history) = 12000

where did this extra 6.xxxxxxxxx days (johnr7 didn't say 12,000 years exactly, he said it was like 12,970) come from?

But he created man in one of the days that he created the earth.. oh forget it, it's not like it's true anyway.

The days in the first chapter of Genesis represent ages. The OEC theory says they can be any length of time. They just do not know how long those individual ages are.

The problem with this is, the Bible clearly teaches that a day to God is equal to 1000 years to us:

2 Peter 3:8
But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

That means the literal reading of Genesis Chapter one would assign 1000 years to each day. Now, I hope you can follow me here. The Bible can have more than one meaning. So the days in Genesis chapter one can represent 1000 years, but also they can repersent ages that are much longer than 1000 years in length.

Then it gets complicated because you get into Physics. According to Dr. Gerald Schroeder each day in Genesis is half the length of the day before it. Just like the universe is expanding at a rate so that it doubles in half the time. Or living organims grow at a rate of double in half the time. I hope I did not lose you there, but you can read what Dr Schroeder says about it:

Actually, John, the Bible does not clearly teach that "a day to God is equal to 1000 years to us." When Peter (and Moses in Psalm 90:4) point out that "with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day," we are being taught that God is not limited by time as we are--not that each of God's days is precisely equal to 1,000 Earth years. Thus, Peter quoted from Psalms 90:4 to show that a thousand years is not very long to the eternal God, and that we should not grow impatient because God's timetable does not mesh precisely with ours.

Thank you for the link to one of Dr. Schroeder's articles. I have yet to find one of his books or articles that has not been stimulating, thought-provoking and well-reasoned and -researched. However, Dr. Schroeder is pointing out that because of lime dilation, six consecutive 24-hour periods of time measured at the speed of outward thrust using Einstein's theory (or law) of relativity and a universal time-clock based on cosmic background radiation and the wavelength of light beginning about the time God initiated creation (what science now calls the Big Bang) would be equal to about 15.75 billion Earth-years looking back toward the time of creation.
