  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all,

My Dad is having a wierd problem with his PC. It is connected to the phone-line through the modem and when it is switched off and someone phones in, the PC switches itself on. I also used to have this problem but then I got broadband so my PC isn't connected to the phoneline. Anyone have any idea what is causing this?

cheers!

yeah one of my mates had the same problem. if you dont want to mess around on the computer (if your not confident about messing with the bios) i wouldnt recommend trying to fix it that way. but there is a simple fix, just unplug the the phone line from the moden when not in use.. easy!

Probably a bad driver there. I'd try uninstalling the modem and reinstalling it. When a phone call comes in, a signal is sent to the modem, 99% of the time it doesn't do anything, but some people have it set up so that the modem answers the phone or whatever (like a fax machine). It's possible that the compter is getting confused when a call comes in, the cause of which is most likely a bad driver.

Check your bios. There should be an option to allow the computer turn on when it recieves a signal from the phone and/or network. You'd want to disable that. Not all computers have this option, some do.
I Agree with checking the bios, with my system the Wake-On-Lan wakes up everytime someone else on the network tries to access my computer and I also have the problem that if I turn on one of my external usb drives that it boots the computer so I disabled those features in the bios and all is well.....
