Hi!

I am good friends with a couple and I have been "working" on them to go to church again. They are struggling in their marriage and I've been urging them to go because I know Christ will help them.

The wife was brought up in a Presbyterian church, husband in a Catholic church...

Anyways, FINALLY they have begun going to church, her church. When they told me I was exstatic!

But then as we talked about it, she was telling me that they(Presbyterians) do not believe Jesus is God, but just the son of God. I tried explaining the Trinity, but, well you know how easy that is. I ended by suggesting they should discuss this with the minister at her church.

So...

Can you please confirm for me that Presbyterians DO believe in the Trinity?

Thank you.

Peace be with you.

Yes, we do believe in the Trinity, and we hold to the Apostles Creed also.

Your friends must be going to a church that is theologically very liberal, and have left the historic teachings of the Presbyterians and the Church as a whole.

I hope not!! Oh my goodness!

I think she is mistaken and hopefully her return to church will get them studying and learning the truth.

Thank you for confirming this for me.

Peace.

In fact, all the reformed traditions believe in the trinity to the best of my knowledge. The Belgic Confession for example includes in it that one must affirm the Athanasian Creed, which is entirely about the trinity.

All Reformed traditions do believe in the Trinity. To deny the Trinity is to leave the Christian faith.

In the worst of ways. If Jesus Christ were not God in flesh what would we have?

I'm Presbyterian and I can assure you that we do believe in the Nicene Creed & Athanasian Creed, even if most will give you a blank stare about the second creed. Even the very theologically liberal PCUSA believes in the Trinity. The problem is that they don't teach much of anything anymore and that leaves people free to believe almost anything.

I grew up PCUSA - which is the more liberal of the Presbyterian churches - we believed in the Trinity, that Jesus was fully God and fully Man, held to both the Nicene and Apostles Creed.

Maybe she just misunderstood what was said????

Hello again.

I have another question.

Does the Presbyterian church believe in the Real Presence when administering communion?

Thank You.

Peace be with you.

Yes we do, however we do not hold to transsubstatiation. There are other theories of "real presence."

Coram Deo,
Kenith
