A few months ago, my mom and I were babysitting at this special event we were having at our church. We were taking care of about 20 kids ranging from 1 & 1/2 -5 years old. My dad and I volunteer in the toddler room (1 & 1/2 - 2 yr old), he's in there every week and I once or twice a month. Anyway, there was a 3 year old in there who I knew quite well, Katie. Her dad sings in the choir and her mom teaches one of the Sunday School classes, her older brother was also in the toddler room about 2 years ago.
Katie had brought a small picture Bible with her to the room. Toward the end of the service, when most of the kids had left, one couple came in to pick up their boy. Some of their friends had invited them to our church, and they were very quiet when they came in, not knowing anyone.
I was holding Katie in my arms and standing near the door when they came in. She was holding her Bible, and she suddenly reached over toward the counter (little island thing that separates the doorway from the rest of the room, lets people come in without kids escaping :D ). I put her down on the counter and she began flipping through the Bible. She got about half way through, and I realized that it started with Jesus' birth.
The couple looked over and listened to the young blue-eyed blonde tell me about how God had sent his son to die on the cross so that all the Christians could go to heaven. When she got to the picture with Jesus on the cross I asked her "Katie, why do you think God would let His son die?" She just looked up at me and smiled, saying "He was sad that Jesus had to die, but He was happy that all the Christians could come to heaven with Him and be angels."
I for one was amazed that this little girl could make sharing her faith seem so simple and beautiful, when I had made it seem so hard. Katie has been an inspiration to me. I'll never forget turning to hand Jake to his parents, and I saw that I wasn't the only one with tears in my eyes. They said they would definitely be coming back. Jake's parents are now in a small group with Katie's parents and attend church every week.
Every day, I pray that God will give me Katie's innocence and faith in what she holds to be true, so that I can share it with others.
(sorry that was so long, I kinda got carried away there :D)
