Praying with the Saints

Hi All, I am Evangelical Presbyterian. I am labeled Protestant. I consider myself a Historical Christian. I have been thinking about praying with the Saints.

Romans 8:26
English Standard Version Anglicised
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

1. When someone who knows us goes to Heaven, they share everything they know with others about us.
2. When we pray out loud, Angels hear Us and visit Heaven daily. It is possible that they make side trips to visit our loved ones in Heaven.
3. Based on Romans 8:26 and the Nature of God. The Holy Spirit simply brings our names to the minds of Saints in Heaven. They need only at the end of the hour pray, "In Jesus Name" for all the names they were given. The Holy Spirit fills in the details.
4.) Concerning Prayers for the Dead which I learned in Hebrew School decades ago. God is not limited by time. When we pray for those who have died. God is able to apply those prayers both when they were on earth and are in the afterlife. This argument is answered by anti-Catholic flaming and never gets replied to.

Blessing for You and Everyone: May God Grant you Long Life, Great Health, Wisdom, Good Family, Prosperity in all things physical and spiritual, and may the virus be allergic & afraid of everyone.

Virus Joke: If you do not want anyone invading your space, simply stop showering.

Have a Blessed Mary Christmas, Holiday Season and Life,

This is similar to my understanding as well, which is why I don't get hung up on questions such as, 'How can they hear the prayers of everyone?', ect. We pray in and by the Holy Spirit as they do as well. The Holy Spirit is our meeting place and it is he that enabled us to think and say what we do while praying. Notice how St. John while he was in the Spirit, was able to see every single creature praising God. It is also notable that Christ said we will be like the angels who neither marry or are given in marriage and St. Paul says, I will know fully as I am fully known. Now, these last two verses apply to the resurrection but we know that to be with the Lord is a foretaste of it (the resurrection).

If praying to Saints was biblical we would see evidence but we dont. The apostles didn't pray to dead saints. Paul didn't pray to Stephan. He prayed to the Lord.
The OP is speaking about praying with the saints not to.

I see no evidence that The Spirit tells the dead saints to pray for us.
Prayer comes by the Spirit and the saints pray for us. I have to go now, if no one has responded with verses when I get back I will.

None of this appears to be based on Scripture. And it's not commonly believed by Christians, either Catholic or Protestant, in any case. So where did you come up with these notions?

We know that the saints pray for us, but not that we are to pray to them.

Praying with the Saints

The Eastern and Western liturgies (Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican) contain this prayer (or a paraphrase) prior to Communion;

It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting, who in the multitude of your saints did surround us with so great a cloud of witnesses that we, rejoicing in their fellowship, may run with patience the race that is set before us and, together with them, may receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying…

Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

So even for Lutherans and Anglicans who would reject specific prayer to the saints, do acknowledge that they pray with the saints in heaven.

...
3. Based on Romans 8:26 and the Nature of God. The Holy Spirit simply brings our names to the minds of Saints in Heaven.

1. The Holy Spirit "intercedes for us" with what deity in heaven??? one of our recently departed relatives? Is that who the Holy Spirit goes to - to intercede for us?
2. I don't know of any text saying "the Holy Spirit brings our names to the minds of saints in heaven"

Rom 8 says it is God the Father that is reading the mind of the Spirit to determine the prayer request made by someone on Earth -- as it is "improved" by the Holy Spirit.

26 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

It does not say "He intercedes between saints in heaven and saints on earth"

In the Bible - people are earth - are "the saints".

====================

Psalm 16:3
As for the saints who are on the earth, They are the majestic ones; all my delight is in them.

Acts 9:13
But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints in Jerusalem;

Acts 9:32 Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he also came down to the saints who lived at Lydda.

Acts 26:10
And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, after receiving authority from the chief priests, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being put to death.

Romans 12:13
contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

Romans 15:26
For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.

Romans 16:15
Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them.

1 Corinthians 1:2
To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

1 Corinthians 16:1
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you are to do as well.

Suppose then - that you pray for someone who died without accepting Christ - is it your view that God goes back in time - gets them to accept the gospel while alive and then after your prayer they are now a saved saint?? Do you think the "Timeline changes" with your prayers - or ??

The other alternative is that God looks forward in time - sees that you will pray that prayer -- and so then in real time during the life of that person causes them to be a born-again Christian. However in that case - how would you ever know to pray as if they had not accepted Christ??

messing around with the timeline is not something that you see in the Bible - in terms of "Changing history" because it requires the idea that God learns something today - about what He was supposed to do in the past - but neglected to do.

Isn't the OP just speaking about Theosis essentially? That we are informed by the Spirit rather than possess a natural knowledge means (to me) that we operate by grace. Also, I think the OP is referring to the idea that the angels which assist also minister before God

Did you see the link I posted above?
Revelation 5 doesn't say the Spirit tells the saints to pray for us. It says the elders are holding the prayers of the saints but its not saying they are praying themselves.

I see no evidence that The Spirit tells the dead saints to pray for us.
I see no evidence in the Bible that says we cease being members of His body after we depart this earth.

that doesn't refute what I said. It doesn't prove the assertion made about the Spirit telling dead saints to pray for us either.

now that you cant refute my claim, dont limit what each member of His body can do for the other members.

Just say, "even though not biblical, I believe this..."
