  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does catholic pray in tongues too?

I'm pretty surprised when seeing people discussing about it in a catholic forum. Seems like catholic churches do have charismatic masses and church members pray in tongues and "shout" praises to the Lord.

Pls enlightening me on this and tell me more about what catholics views of praying in tongues.

Thanks!

I know that in the bible when the apostles started speaking in tongues, the idea was that the people who were standing around were able to understand the apostles words in each their own language. I think somewhere along the line someone exagerated this speaking in tongues to mean something else.

According to the Bible there must be someone there to interpret...

Now there are several lines of thought about this whole speaking in tongues issue:
1. Speaking in tongues consisits of using actual real languages- not just garbaldy goop.

2. It's jibber jabber that is the language of the Spirit

3. as per 1 Cor.- this gifts are the gifts of spiritual infancy and have passed away as Paul discussed....

Often what you hear when you hear people speaking in tongues is supposedly "the language of the spirit"- which I suppose is fine if done alone during personal prayer time. However if no one in a gathering can understand what the heck your"groans and utterings" mean-- they should be kept quiet- as the are not edifying- again, as per Scripture. Personally I like to think that on Pentecost, the disciples were given the gift of Speaking the languages of the people they would be spreading the Gospel to- which makes a lot more sense, and also can be a gift now in people who learn laguages easily....

I always understood the speaking of tongues to be the supernatural ability of the disciples of Jesus to speak in foreign languages. If gibberish, as practiced by Pentacostals, is the "speaking in tongues" referred to in Acts, I'd rather stick to the three "languages" I speak.

So if it is another earthly language explain:
1Cor14:2 "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed no one understands him;he utters mysteries with his spirit"
Does this means he must speak another earthly dialect so God can understand him better??? (sarcasm)

Welcome to OBOB AfricaWim! :)

I'm sure that we all managed to appreciate the sarcasm in your last sentence without you bracketting it.

That's fine for personal prayer- although if one is seeking to remove oneself (ego)out of prayer, why not use the Our Father, or ask Jesus or Mary to pray for what we most need....

If tongues, as I wrote - "utterings and groanings( of the spirit)" they are not to be uttered in public unless there is an actual reallive person available to interpret.

Also there is debate (even among Protestants)about whether, as Paul writes, the time for these (gifts) has come to an end.....

I meant it! Really!
I asked the question because I have a friend (well, aquaintance would probably be a better term), because he *supposedly* can speak in toungues (babbling kind) and he actually did at a retreat we were at (although I couldn't really hear him...other people could though) during adoration. Nobody in the room had the gift of interpretation, so I was curious as to whether or not he should have been praying/speaking out loud or if he should have just done so with himself and God. Wow...I don't think anything I just said could be considered coherent...I don't even understand half of what I just said.
