  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think 1 might be too young. I would say wait until he's at least 2, and if he's not potty trained by 3, don't worry. Mine is 3 and is not yet completely consistent with potty training, but it's no big deal...she's got the idea, we just don't always make it on time. Their little bodies aren't developed enough for them to control their bladders or their bowels until they get a little older, and it's different for each child. If you wanted to, I guess you could let him practice sitting on the potty and get comfortable with it, but I wouldn't expect any real results for another year or two. Good luck, though. :)

Every child is different....boys are later than girls (so I hear). The earliest I have heard people trying is at two, and they have a good long several months ahead. Most wait till they are closer to three, and that is easier on everyone so I hear. My sweetie is a girl, 31 mo old, and I have really not even started with her yet. I would rather spend the next six months with little friction, and start when she is three. If I start now I am pretty sure I will be done about the same time as if I start at three.

To each his own thou...If seth is ready...go for it!!

I've heard that by about 2 1/2 they are able to start training, but every child is different! Andie is 27 months old, she knows what her potty chair is for & we sit on it sometimes...but I'm not pushing it! I got her potty chair I think when she was maybe 20 months or so, just put it in the bathroom to get her used to it sitting there & let her take the lead as to how much interest she showed. I started even before that with reading books about going to the potty & Bear in the Big Blue House has a potty video that she watches, too! Good luck!!

My kids were both 2 1/2. It took my daughter 3 days and my son about 1 month. Daytime and nighttime, No.1 and No.2! I took the initiative. Though they were really not interested I suspected they would be capable of it, so I went for it. It worked:clap:

I suspect age 1 might be a little too early. However it's never to early to have a potty chair all set up so that he can sit on it and get used to having it around.

They have to at least be 1)walking, 2) able to pull down their underwear, 3)willing to learn. If one of these is not in place yet, it is best to wait. My son is 3 and every time I change his diaper, I ask him, "do you want to try on the potty?", so far he said yes twice, but he is just slower at some things. I don't want to make it a punishment, so I am trying not to push the issue, just work him into it. He was slow to hold his head up, sit up, roll over, stand, crawl, walk, etc etc. He just takes his time learning so we are giving him the time he needs.

My daughter is 32 months and we have about a 99% success rate now. We bought a potty not long after she turned two and just let her get used to it. When I would go to the bathroom she'd want to sit on the potty too so we'd let her though she never did anything in it right away. She quickly caught on to going "poopoos" in the potty but had trouble with "peepees" but we didn't push it much. When she turned 2.5 we started pushing a little bit more as we knew she had the bladder capacity as she would wake up dry in the morning. A couple months later she is 99% daytime trained and 99.9% nighttime trained. I think trying to start training at age 1 would be a little on the early side but take your queues from your son.

From the time that Anna began walking around and following me into the bathroom, I've let her become aquainted with the toilet. I wasn't making a point to train her, but to let her become comfortable with the idea, and to see what was supposed to happen on the toilet. So, she'd come and sit, and sometimes go. Most times she didn't, but at least she was comfy with trying.

When she was between 2 and 2.5, we began making an effort to get her to use the toilet regularly. I knew that she was pretty ready when she was able to keep her diaper dry through the night.

I tried potty training at 2 but it did not work with my daughter, she had no interests. We tried all kinds of rewards, praise, dolls on the potty etc. It was very frustrating because she would sit on the potty for 20 minutes and 10 minutes later I would be cleaning a puddle up. We ended up taking about a 9 month break until my daughter started showing interest in wearing underwear.
It was right before her 3rd birthday when we started again. This time she had the attention span, the ablility to control her bladder/bowel movements, and the willingness to learn. She was completely day/night trained within 2 months. This time around with my son, I am going to wait until he shows interest.

Every child is different. You have to look for the signs.
- does he wake up dry?
- does he show interest?
- can he pull his pants up and down by himself?
- does he tell you when he's gone in his diaper?

I think 1 is much too early. And, I don't know where you live if it gets cold, but winter is hard because they tend to get a chill when they're outside and have to go more frequently.

My daughter wasn't completely potty trained until she was 3 1/2. I was hearing about all of these child prodigies who were potty trained at 18 months and was concerned. But my pediatrician told me it didn't matter how old she was, all children are potty trained by the time the get to kindergarten. In general, boys train later than girls. My son is 27 months old and shows absolutely no interest in the potty.

Oh, one thing I won't be doing with my son that I did with my daughter - pull ups. I think that delayed my daughter because she didn't have the wet sensation. HTH

Very good point about the Pull-Ups. They do save you a lot of messes, but they're really not much different than diapers. Although, they do have those new ones out now that still let the child feel wet and still keep the mess in...I think they're made by Pampers. Feel and Learn or something? But, cloth training pants are much cheaper. But, at night I always put mine in a Pull-Up...it's a pain to wash sheets every day, and it's rather difficult for children to control their bladders as they sleep (as far as being able to wake themselves up and go potty). Also, make sure you invest in a waterproof mattress pad before you get rid of diapers...accidents are inevetable.

MY SON USED THE POTTY FOR THE FIRST TIME JUST YESTERDAY!!!!

We have been having him sit on the potty while we fill up the bathtub in the evening and yesterday he finally went pee! I was so happy! He kept squealing "YAY YAY YAY POOOOTTTY!" I cried and called Grandma.

I am a nut. But I love my kid.

How old is your son? By the way, you're not a nut! Andie (my 2 y.o.) has gone pee & poop on hers, once (both by accident, I'm sure, since she now shows no interest!)...I cried & called grandparents & aunts & uncles immediately! isn't it funny?

My son is almost 2 1/2. Now he goes pee every single time I put him on the potty. He loves it and has started saying "big boy pee potty!" like a mantra. He still uses his diapers if he needs to go and I haven't offered to take him. In other wordws, he doesn't know enough yet to say he needs to go potty before he goes. That's OK though. I will take what I can get from my little sweetheart.

I know all about the signs that children are ready to use the potty. But what can you do with a boy who is 3 in November and doesn't show those signs yet. Should I be waiting?

It is nearly SUmmer in Australia, I was wanting to start training, but we have taken him out of nappies and put him in underpants around the house but he isn't sitting on the potty or toilet. We have a potty and also a ladder thing that goes over the toilet seat. He just wets anywhere he wants to. This has been since MOnday.

We didn't even start until they hit 3 but every kid is different so do what you think will work for your little one.... the summer is the best time to train, lots of outside time (bring the potty out) and easier for them to get little pull on shorts (or a dress) off for going then lots of warmer winter clothes. :)
