Potty training Methods?

Hi guys,

As most of you know I have a little one called "Seth" well he just turned 3 and is still not potty trained. He is stuburn in this area. My mom said I was the same way. Well I wanted to see if there was anyone out there that could share with me some ideas of methods that helped you potty train ur little one?

Let me tell you what we are starting to do and maybe you have already done this and you can let me know if it works or not?

So I made a chart and on this chart I have it set up something like this

Sunday|Monday|Tuesday|Wednesday|Thursday|Friday|Saturday

1st week

2nd week

3rd week

4th week

5th week

6th week

7th week

And each day he pottys he gets a smiley stamp by his name, the days he doesn't potty he gets a frown, at the end of the week, if he has 5 or more smileys on the weeks colom he gets a treat like a candy bar, after the 7th week if all slots are full with smileies he gets a really big nice toy from the store.

Do you think this would work? Or do you think I shouldn't brive him? At this point I will try anything, Ive done the put a cheerio in the tolit and let him rope it, Ive done the "Go potty with daddy" and all that I just do not know what else to do now.

My one concern would be that at 3 he might be a bit young to comprehend the week-long timeframe? Maybe a small reward each time he successfully potties might be more appropriate.

BTW, I don't consider a reward for desired behaviour to be a bribe. A bribe is more a reward for bad behaviour (like giving a child a lolly if he'll stop screaming). We don't consider paychecks to be bribes, right?

when my son got potty trained, around 2 years old, I followed what a tv show suggested, and it worked.

first, it helps if the child has seen people go potty on the toilet, or you can get a potty doll to show. then they suggested make potty training day totally fun, like a party. I secretly bought some toys my son never had and never seen before (little water suirt guns, a variety pack, and they were cheap). Then on potty training day, got them out. We were doing this on the back porch on a nice day. The potty chair was out, and I said "okay, after you go potty in the potty chair, you can have a new toy."

he pottied right away in the potty.

then just kept that up the rest of the day, we played with water squirters and new sprinkler things that day. that helped him get used to the potty chair.

then there are accidents, but we basically stayed out of diapers after that, my son learned it doesn't feel so good to have peed pants. the bowel part is a little harder, I still have to help him wipe (or else he gets ow-ies, rashes there), and he's in kindergarten.

it's not easy, hang in there. making it fun was a big help for us, especially with the new toys as a reward.

Seth already says "Ew mommy poopy" and I know he has already pooed in his pullup, and I ask him all the time "Seth, hunny, do you need to go potty?" and he'll go "No" and then I'll ask 30mins later, its always no, but I do sit him on his chair every hour of the day, I know his bladder is smaller then mine lol.

3 can be a little young to learn how to potty, but if you are determined, this is our method.

Explain the potty.

Sit the child on the potty every 20 minutes for about 2 minutes each until they potty.

Clap and praise for pottying.

Then we do naked week. A week of running around the house naked. When we start to see the signs of needing to potty, we send them to the potty.

After about a week of no accidents, we add underwear.

After a week of no accidents, we do pants.

By then, they should get the hang of it.

we did some of the same things. My son is Very stubborn. He would pee/poop in his pants as SOON as they were put on so after a week of this we took away his pants and he kept doing it so we let him run around the house in a long t-shirt b/c he wouldn't pee/poop on his own feet. after about a week he was mostly potty trained. However he would still say no if I asked if he needed to go so I stopped asking and started to tell him to go.

Regular moments for it works too. For example - always after changing a nappy, have a quick sit. Always before bedtime. Always in the morning. You get the idea. So it becomes part of the rhythm of the day rather than some kind of big deal. Gina Ford (who I don't much like) has written a book called 'Potty Training in One Week' - if you are getting desperate you could always try that!

How's it going?

I finally got my 3 yr old boy trained. We just came to the point where we weren't going to play anymore, and stopped putting on the diaper. He had 2 accidents the first day, and maybe 1 or 2 after that.

Now that he's learned to stand up "like daddy" I think he enjoys it too much.

My middle one was 3 1/2 before he was potty trained. I feel like I rushed my oldest and so I decided to wait until my second was ready. One day he brought it up himself saying he wanted to go potty, that was on a Friday and by the following Monday he was fully potty trained.

NOW, he's five and so busy that he doesn't always stop to go to the potty, so there are still occasions where he'll dribble and start doing the pee pee dance until somebody says 'would you PLEASE go to the bathroom!'
