  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings!

I am just checking to see the potential opportunities for graduate school. I graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism-Broadcast, and have been employed by a local TV station ever since.

I really feel as if this is a good time for me to go back to school, but I'm really not sure what area would be best for me or how to get started. The particular areas of interest range from education, film studies, international business, mathematics, and sports marketing. It seems as if journalism would be an easy segue to a secondary degree/certificate, but I'm actually looking to break away from.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I speak from my perspective as someone who spent about 16 years in various college programs. I would check out these 5 factors:
(1) the chances of employment after obtaining each graduate degree. Ask the relevant departments at the colleges in question for some data or anecdotal evidence.
(2) Ask yourself which graduate program fits best with your job history. Why? Because this will impact the quality of your resume after graduation and hence your chances for improved employment opportunities.
(3) Ask about the textbooks required for relevant courses in programs and peruse them to see if they sustain your interest.
(4) Check out which programs or colleges offer the best financial aid packages for prospective students. Deep debt can create a cloud of depression over your studies.
(5) Visit the colleges you are seriously considering and ask yourself how appealing the social atmosphere and opportunities are in each case. You will be more motivated to study if you enjoy the environment.
