Some good points there. I'm sure many small, struggling churches can relate to this article.

From what I have observed in Adventism over the years, whenever a church begins to criticize the pastor, evangelist and the local conference, they are headed for death. Plain and simple. It's all just passing the buck. The church itself doesn't seem to want to accept the blame or responsibility for the way they have ended up. Once the attacks against the leadership ends, the focus and energy is usually re-directed to reaching the lost.

Also, nothing will kill a church or drive the youth away faster than a 'cleansing of the camp' mindset. Extreme, abberant theology which condemns to hell those who think differently is about as appealing as a bowl of maggots and milk for breakfast to young people.

Sometimes it is necessary for the elders and the pastor to consider church discipline against the most offensive and aggressive agitators . Sometimes the real problem people flat-out need to be given thier walking papers if the church is going to be free of thier tyranny and attempts at control and power. Usually these types will leave eventually, but the untold damage they can do to the church body is immense.

When they are finally gone, board meetings can actually be a pleasant experience again.

Sorry if I'm mistaken, but I thought you were really traditional/conservative, dj?

Given that I once got my *** chewed out by one the "conservatives" (who spouted off Catholic theology after I had just finished preaching) "those people" are in the sub-basement of the outhouse--they sure are cold in the winter!

Just like in politics I am very independent--I like the slogan of one web site: "If the Bible doesn't teach it, then neither will we!"

The Emerging Church is a very unorthodox movement tied heavily to liberal theology.

I hadn't read the book and the article didn't give enough details. I sincerely hope that they didn't imbibe in the theology and just used some of the methods--like actually listening to the young people for instance.

Conklin, why don't you have an SDA icon?

It's like I also don't have any political leanings to either of the current extremes--unlike certain people around here! Get thee in the center and stay there.

I'm a Christian; denominations are man-made labels.
