• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
 • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How do you stop popups that come up when you're even on popup-free sites?

I'm getting popups for diet aids, "Block-Messenger" programs, and, um, "male enhancement" products.  >_<

Is there any way to stop these ads? They started coming when I downloaded Yahoo Instant Messenger around 6 months ago, although then it was like 1 ad every few hours-now it's around 3 ads an hour sometimes. I don't even run YIM anymore, I exit it before I go online-yet I still get these popups.

Is that the one with the pop-up “messenger service”? Since you don’t use yim did you try uninstalling it? Sometimes uninstalling the program will take out the adware program as well. If that don’t work than try a spyware scanner. Some programs install extra junk that will hit you with pop-ups.

I am getting these 'messanger service' pop-up add as well. They are really annoying, especially when they pop-up half way through playing break-out! I have installed a firewall, but oddly this seems to have decreased the number I get without totally stopping them.

To disable Windows "Messenger Service" pop-up ads:

1. From the Start Menu, select Settings
2. Open the Control Panel
3. Open Administrative Tools
4. Open Services
5. Double-Click the Messenger service
6. Configure the start-up type to disabled

Today at 10:38 AM Susan said this in Post #6

If it's anything, the popups I get look like Windows 95/98 windows.

Like a grey system notification with an OK button at the bottom and says ‘Messenger Service’ at the top? If that’s the case than disable it as mentioned above. You may also want to pick up a firewall program sometime if you don’t have one installed right now. Most firewall programs will create a log file for you that will give you the spammers IP address. You can send that info to your Internet Service Provider so they can take some form of action against the spammer.

That will work. If you have 2000 or XP.
Also, if you dissable this service you wont be able to net send to anyone on your LAN, which you probably don't have to worry about.

Free anti-popup programs work good, and deleteing spyware cookies is a must - where companies track where you go on the web and then determine what advertising to put in your face. Here's the two I use, and they work very good:

http://www.adshield.org/ - block ad popups - there is a free block list that can be imported here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/block.txt

http://www.lavasoft.de/ - AdAware - finds and deletes cookies in your registry and folders. This has regular updates that are free to download and keep track of the everchanging names of spy cookies that are placed on your computer from the web.
