Pope John Paul the second plans to enhance the centuries-old Roman Catholic prayer tradition known as the rosary. The pope is expected to add five new mysteries to the 15 already contemplated by the Catholic faithful as they recite the series of prayers that comprise the rosary. The prayers are recited with the help of 59 prayer beads. The new mysteries, called the mysteries of light, include Christ's baptism, his first miracle, his transfiguration as he revealed himself to his apostles and the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The pope's innovation will be explained in an apostolic letter to be released Wednesday as he marks the 24th anniversary of his election to the papacy. He is also expected to declare this year from October to October the year of the rosary. The current fifteen mysteries contemplated in praying the rosary are divided into the joyful mysteries surrounding Jesus' birth and infancy; the sorrowful mysteries of his suffering and death; and the glorious mysteries of resurrection. The rosary is a tradition of the Catholic faith that has evolved over several centuries. The fifteen mysteries of the current rosary were standardized by Pope Pius V in 1569. At 82 years old, Pope John Paul is among the longest serving pontiffs ever.
