The motives of the conclave in selecting Robert Prevost as pope appear to be continuity with Pope Francis's approach as well as unity within the global church. So the church will continue to reach out and build bridges. Since he is a dual national American-Peruvian one immediate bridge is that between North & South America.

His appointment highlights some interesting tensions between the church and the Trump Administration.
1) Stewardship of the environment

3) Poverty

How can you associate the anti-Christ with the new pope or even indeed with Trump? The Anti-Christ is the political beast and the false prophet is a more religious acolyte. This pope is not an acolyte for Trump and Trump is doing things that are a mixed bag from a Christian point of view:

War on Woke virus - good
Allowing states to decide abortion laws and lack of support for "family planning" around the world - good
Defence of Christians in other states. good
Concern for the poor and sick - bad
Breaking alliances and eroding world stability - bad
Stewardship of creation - bad

I am hopeful that just as Pope John Paul II assisted President Ronald Reagan in the plan of God to break down the Iron Curtain so also Pope Leo will cooperate with President Trump in the plan of God to break down the Bamboo Curtain.

The Trump Tariffs on China seem to be scaring the leadership of the Communist Party of China and thus they may be able to calm Xi down from his goals for China, to seemingly surpass the USA as the number one economic and military superpower.

I am hopeful that the oppressive government of China may soon give citizens much more freedom. The Trump Tariffs on my nation Canada seemed to immediately result in the Canadian government doing more to stop the smuggling of drugs into the USA. It seems like Canada is becoming tougher on crime as well. Perhaps that was one of the major goals of the Trump Tariffs?

Xi Jinping is a stronger and more assertive representative of an uglier form of Chinese nationalism, despite his socialist rhetoric. In many ways, he is reverting to the type of previous Chinese emperors who always tried to force cultural integration on any foreign influences in the country. Unity has been the primary aspiration of any Chinese state since the chaos that followed the fall of the Han dynasty and arguably even before that. Communism may be dead, but Confucian moral humanism is still alive and kicking in the place.

In the case of healthy foreign influences like the Christian church, his persecution of believers is not good for China's future and undermines its global credibility. But Trump presents him with a "foreign devil" the like of which China has not faced since the Japanese invasions. Trump has the clout to break the existing Chinese trade model, and this must give Xi pause for thought. He can no longer count on irresistible economic expansion if Trump starts closing down his trading options.

Pope Leo's job here is to remind the Chinese that, since the Jesuits of the sixteenth century, Catholics have never been a threat to the Middle Kingdom but rather a technological blessing and a reminder of the larger world that China needs to work with. China needs friends to prosper moving forward. Russia is the Silk Road choice of the moment, but Russia is a natural enemy, not a natural friend. If China continues on its current course, it will be encircled by people looking to contain it rather than trade and relate to it.
