Pope Francis said the international community should investigate whether Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute genocide.

“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of genocide. It should be investigated carefully to determine whether it fits into the technical definition formulated by jurists and international bodies,” he said in a new book.

An excerpt from the book, “Hope Never Disappoints: Pilgrims Toward a Better World,” written with the journalist Hernán Reyes Alcaide, was published Nov. 17 by Vatican News, the Italian newspaper La Stampa and the Spanish newspaper El País.

Pope Francis’ claim that Israel action in Gaza could be ‘genocide’ draws criticism

Pope Francis’ call for an investigation into claims that a genocide may be happening in Gaza has garnered criticism.

In a passage of a new book published ahead of the 2025 Jubilee Year and released on Sunday, Pope Francis noted that according to some experts, “what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide” and called for a careful investigation, according to Vatican News.

The book by Hernán Reyes Alcaide is titled “Hope Never Disappoints: Pilgrims Toward a Better World” and was written for the occasion of the 2025 Jubilee, which is scheduled to begin Christmas Eve. It includes interviews with Pope Francis and will be released Nov. 19 in Italy, Spain, and Latin America by Edizioni Piemme Publishers. It will be published in other languages at a later date.

ROME – A 93-year-old Holocaust survivor who once received Pope Francis in her Rome apartment, and who later wrote a book about the experience to which the pontiff contributed the foreword, has publicly criticised Francis for calling for investigations to determine if the conflict in Gaza meets the technical standards for a “genocide”.

“Genocide is something else. When a million children are burned to death, then you can talk about genocide,” Edith Bruck said in a Nov. 18 interview with Italian media.

Bruck, a Hungarian-born Jew and survivor of Auschwitz, Dachau and Bergen-Belsen, and who lost both parents and an older brother in the camps, said the bloodshed in Gaza is a “tragedy that concerns everyone”, but insisted that Israel is not attempting to wipe out the entire Palestinian population.
