  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Great topic.

You all here know that missions is my passion.

The Pope's comments were little suprise to me.

There is a much better way: through dialog and what missiologists call insider movements.

And much is very conistent with what might be a Mennonite approach, I think, though some challenges unto broader thinking.

Here are some great resources:

Contextualization Among Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists, A Focus on "Insider Movements"
John and Anna Travis

An Extended Conversation About Insider Movements
Mission Frontiers Magazine

Are We Accelerating or Inhibiting Movements to Christ?

A Muslim and a Christian in Dialogue
Badru D. Kateregga and David W. Shenk

Check them out and let me know what you think than maybe we can get into this some more! :)

I thought a horrible thought this morning about this man's statements. Perhaps he wants to die a Christian martyr? He's not stupid he knew his comments would cause a riot, and even put his life in danger. If he is killed by Muslims think of what that would do for world peace?

What is more saddening is the Christians who agree with him.

Firstly, if I have understood the pope's comments correctly, he was quoting someone else, so not his thoughts necessarily. Secondly, lot of fuss about nothing. Extremists on both sides cause all sorts of friction but certainly denigrating someone's religion is no way to reach them. Thirdly, despite the hyperbole I've heard about Islam not denigrating women the fact of the matter is most Islamic countries treat their women extremely shabbily & in this day & age that is apalling.

Hmmm.
As a politician (to me, the pope seems to fit this category), the remarks were stupid. He had to know it would upset people.

As a church leader, he was half right.
Some of the teachings of Muhamad ARE evil. I wouldn't call them inhuman, however, but far too human.

Sorry, folks, Islam is plain wrong and I have no problem with a pastor telling his flock that. True, that may not be the best way to win a person to Christ, and certianly not the best thing to say in such a public venue.
What was the purpose of pope's speech? WHo was his intended audiance?

Sorry my thoughts aren't forming a trian; this is as good as I can do right now.

HIs comments, though stupid, are correct. It is weak to try to hide from them now that things have gotten weird. If he believes what he said, as I do, he should stand behind it. The sad thing, is that he may pay the ultimate price for his statement, and people will consider him a martyr instead of what he really is.
